well, sorry to get your hopes up, but this isn't that kind of thread! :D

just wanted to post a bit regarding my stellar ride this afternoon in the peanut-butter covered trails of frick park in pittsburgh, pa, after raining for the past, well, forever.

its pretty rainy here in the fall, and i dont mind it, but hate the bike maintenance that comes after, so rides have been infrequent. after spending some time on here after work, you all gave me the buzz to get out there, hell or, ahem, high water.
it started raining the second i put foot out of door. hello mr. myluck...

my legs were less than solid but i pushed like it was race day, going faster than safe on the leaves and mud in the rain; i could not see from the rain and wind. but the new tires i bought for a muddy race a few weeks ago (panaracer fire xc) hooked up better than expected with low pressure, and i was tossed only once on a "fogeddabout it" tricky peanut butter covered fast rooted and rocky decent when they gave up. the ride was miserable. it was perfect.

i even met 2 swell people in the parking lot (hello holly and scott if you so happen to view), was mudded thoroughly, soaked, cold, and finally, had a wet crotch of course.

you wanted to hear that! i had to reel you in!

hope you all had a swell day also.

Its funny you only saw two people out there. Here in Victoria, since it has a tendancy to rain ALL THE TIME now, people are used to it. The parking lot at the hill is always packed. But I also assume its a bit more mild here then where you are. Cheers to rain and not snow. :D

oh yes, here in the NE US, people avoid the 3 "M's" - mud, maintenance, and water (w can be an m if you stand on your head). haha. i got that from a buddy of mine actually. most of the guys i ride with are 9-5'ers and dont have time for crappy conditions. i look at it as if that's the ONLY time you have, well, get peddlin'!... and mud is fun - its a tangible "right-now" indicator of how hard you are working at it!

Just a little curious about what proper post ride mainenance is. After you hose off all of the gunk, do you just shoot moving parts with oil? or do some parts need to be broken down and regreased?

not really... i hose it down. drop and dry the bike a few times. every 10 hours or so of riding i toothbrush the chain and bust out a degreaser. lube the chain lightly to prevent corrosion after i spray and dry it, thats about it. i live in an apartment complex, where though i am fortunate to have access to a hose here, its away for the winter. so i am left with the dreaded pressurized car wash hose that i use with out pulling the trigger; i just let it spray/trickle out slow and watch the cranks and fork. all that alone is a pain - call me lazy... :o

What lubricant would you recommend for the chain and other parts?

i like a "dry" teflon lube from finish line or pedro's for dry trail conditions, and phil wood's "tenacious oil" for wet mucky conditions for the chain. "dry" refers to the oil will actually 'dry' on there - don't look for a wet chain. "wet lubes", like tenatious oil, STAY wet and are sticky to sort of waterproof your chain. i've been guilty of using dry lube around shock seals too - unknown if that is good or bad

i use white lithium (actually black in color) grease on seatposts, pedal threads and cleats. but thats more during assembly than maintenance

Where were when I was riding in Frick? I used to work for Gatto's, and we would go to Frick on Friday evenings after work.

I now live in Houston.
