Mountain Biking - Carbon Fiber bones

I want to get all of my bones replaced by carbon fiber replicas. I think that I could save some serious weight and beef up my climbing skills.

If I'm sponsored, I can get the top secret stuff that never breaks. I'm also going to check into carbon fiber organs.

Maybe I can find a carbon fiber Powerbar, to go along with my carbon fiber organs...

I just can't see that CF is all that strong . How is a fiberous plastic going to be as strong or stronger than steel or aluminum..heh. I don't even think i would go with titanium as a frame material,it's far more expensive than steel & not even as strong!

It's not a plastic. It's carbon. The carbon-carbon bond can be very strong- see diamond. Incidentally, Kevlar - which you could call a plastic - is stronger than carbon, but not as stiff.

Titanium is not stronger than steel, nor is it lighter than aluminum. The benefit of titanium is that per weight it is stronger than both aluminum and steel. Comparing the Elastic Modulus (For our purposes, Stifness) of the three materials All numbers in 10^6 PSI :Alumnium- 9.9 to 10.3 :Steel- 29.5 to 30 :Titanium- 15 to 16. This shows that titanium is roughly 50% stronger than aluminum, but only half as strong as steel.

Many commonly available steels - 4340, for instance - are often stronger than the commonly available titaniums - 6Al4V or 3Al2.5V. On a strength/weight ratio the 4340's are also very better than 6Al4V.

Make sure you use the hollow tubes. You'll need to inject some marrow in there somewhere, or else depend on blood-doping...

We all know that the strength of a structure is more defined by its shape and design rather than simply the material used to make it up. While CF has a good strength to weight ratio, it is an anisotropic material and this strength is biased along a certain axis. To achieve a multiaxis strength, CF plies are laid multidirectionally across several layers. However, the real "strength" behind CF is the ability for the designer and manufacturer to create intricate shapes which might be impossible or cost-prohibitive to do otherwise with a metal. It is this shape that provides strength, stiffness/flexibility and other real-world attributes to the structure. In the cycling world, too much emphasis seems to be put on the lightweight aspects of CF and not enough is said about its design versatility.

Bamboo bike? yeah, been there... be careful you don't leave it in the garden though, it will take roots. I now have a nice topiary bicycle though!

Yes Khuon, i am afraid it will splinter & one of the splinters will stab me.

Bamboo bike? yeah, been there... be careful you don't leave it in the garden though, it will take roots. I now have a nice topiary bicycle though!
