you should be able to measure across with a metric ruler and estimate to the 10th of a mm

1 inch = 25.4mm

according to what you wrote above, you didn't miss out on anything. was your seat post 25.4 and the one he was selling 27 or not?

If it's the action I think it is, then it was a 30.9mm layback post.

Edit: It wasn't. This (http://cgi.ebay.com/Thomson-Elite-layback-Seatpost-30-9mm-NICE-SHAPE_W0QQitemZ7220591551QQcategoryZ106951QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) is the one I was thinking of. It's at $25 right now. This guy has a ton of stuff up for auction right now, but nothing I'm interested in.

i was all confused before. i was deciding to bid on the thomson and bidding on a stem at the same time. and i lost the stem in the last seconds

i used a calc. and it converted 1 inch to mm and it was 25 and i converted 27mm to inches and it was 1 inch. . . the one i wanted to buy was 27mm

thanks for the tip mtb, i am not looking for a setback though. there is one or two posts that have a day or so left, il see what they are doing tommorow

27mm to an inch was a bad calculation. whatever you were using, try to find something more accurate. 1.6mm is very significant

The post diameter is usually stamped on it somewhere. Look carefully.

There's too much of a chance of making a measuring error unless you're using a caliper. A measuring tape just won't cut it.
