When I was young, there were no "bike paths" that I was aware of. This was back around 1970. But now we have them, like we have so many new marvels. There are so many plusses about them, I'm not sure where to begin. Well, here goes:

1) Bike paths allow you to meander slowly to your destination, giving you more quality time on the bike.
2) Bike paths help you "run into" different types of people and expand your experience of human powered travel, as well as your first aid skills.
3) Bike paths present exciting challenges, like blankets of multi-colored glass shards, sudden 1-inch rises in pavement at bridge junctions and sharp, downhill curves that help you practice your slalom technique.
4) Bike paths protect you from learning dangerous road cycling skills which, once learned, may lead to abandoning the wonders of urban bike paths forever.
5) Bike paths make cyclists of different skill levels equal, so that faster, more experienced cyclists must slow down and travel at the same speed as children on training wheels who are sharing the path.
6) Bike paths sharpen your sidewalk cycling skills by
sharing many similarities with modern sidewalk design,
including uneven pavement that dips at every driveway crossed.
7) Bike paths teach cyclists and dogs to get along better.
8) Bike paths can become party grounds at night, so that you can mix with the wild crowd (if you're adventurous.)
9) Bike paths give government more to be involved with so we can spend more tax dollars that would otherwise be wasted, or worse, not collected in the first place.

do i detect a hint of sarcasm here? Hmmm....My forte.

10. bike paths give suburbanites a reason to drive to the city on nice sunny weekends.

11. bike paths allow bikes to been seen as the sports equipment they are and not as transportation as some mistakenly believe.

12. bike paths help us in our quest to pave the planet

13. bike paths give politicians another outlet for dedication ceremonies

all right i'm done for now.

I just like to cruise at 4mph behind the local college jogging team on the bike path. ;)

14. They prevent me from arriving early enough at wherever I am going to have to wait around for a few minutes.

Pete,

I can really relate with #3 and #6 since I ride the path you are describing every week.

15. Bike paths train you how to operate the Walk/Don't Walk light where the path crosses a busy street.

16. Bike paths provide great training opportunities by routinely testing your skills at repairing tubes (see #3). I guess in that respect bike paths are just like city streets.

17. Bike paths encourage creativity and problem solving by unexpectedly ending at impossibly busy traffic locations.

18. Bike paths are very useful for getting from one place to another as long as they are the same place.

Actually, there is a nice lakefront bike path that comprises about 3 of the last 4 miles of my ride home. Even though it sometimes suffers some of the debris problems mentioned previously, it is a wonderful way to wind down a ride. Except when the part that goes under a bridge is closed due to water on the path from high winds. In which case see 13. above.

Personally, I prefer streets because traffic makes me ride faster. Fear is a great motivator.

19. Bike paths allow me to have a quiet, scenic place to walk on my off cycling days. Since I am a cyclist, I tend to walk on the opposite side of the two-lane path, just as I would along a road, so that I stay clear of speeding cyclists.

20. Bike paths won't give my "air-filled" walking shoes a flat on the debris.
