During the last month i have had to replace the inner tube on my fron rim three times!!! the inner tube keeps ripping around the stem.
Anyone have any ideas how to prevent this from happening?

thanks

If the rim itsself is not causing the problem possibly due to a sharp edge, then you need to refine your technique.Another real remote possibility is a lot of rotten or defective tubes.

Been there, got help here. If you are using a frame pump that clamps directly on valve, you may be causing excess movement in the in the valve as you pump. As you reach higher pressure, the valve hole on the rim can rub against the tube at the base of the valve and cut into it.

After many frustrating experiences like yours, I asked at two of the local LBS around here. Well, no one there could give me tips on how to avoid this problem. So I turned to this forum.

The advice that worked for me was as follows: Mount the pump on the valve and set the head of the pump at the top of your foot. Hold the pump straight up and down and avoid any excess movement. Joe Gardner and Roadbuzz gave me complete directions in a thread I started called "How do I use a frame pump." Go to that thread and get the details.

Good luck!

Another way you can avoid that is to use a pump with a hose on it instead of attaching the pump directly to the valve. I use the Road Morph which in addition to the hose has a fold out handle and foldout foot peg which makes it very easy to use.

it also could be that the rim has a sharp edge where the valve is coming out of the rim, your rim tape may not be covering the sharp edge completely, I actually use a small bit of extra tape in this area on my rims to cover any sharp edges, you could also lightly file the area to remove any sharp edges. inspect your rim carefully to see if there are any sharp edges.
