I needed a break before my upcoming vacation, so it was a welcome thing indeed to get hip to the tenth first annual Replacement Festival over in Moab.

Moab. You know. That overrated place with no singletrack. That place that is too cold and snowy to ride right now.

wabb.

Naw, I wouldn't wanna go there either. It's just too mind-boggling and imagination beggaring.

http://www.anthonysloan.com/moabfeb05/moabfebIMG_1481.jpg

And weird things happen there.

http://www.anthonysloan.com/moabfeb05/moabfebIMG_1576.jpg

And did I mention the utter lack of singletrack?

It was a fine few days out there. Beer and rides flowed in plenty. These are just a few teaser pics. In a few weeks, if I get around to it, I'll fling up the rest.

Moab is my favorite place to ride .The only thing I don't like about the place is the 3.2% beer. You get sooo bloated after a few pitchers at Woody's . Oh yeah, it would be very hard for me to find work there as a Marine Mechanic. Thanx for the photos . I need to get there this year for the Fat Tire Festival .

I want to go there this year. You have an address so I can mapquest to the trailhead? I'm referring to an address to a bikeshop at the trailhead or something. Thanks :)

Beautiful pictures, I'm ready to go back!

What trails did you ride? I think my favorite two were Porcupine Rim and Amassa Back (before the gas company screwed it up).

mjsca07 - Check out Poison Spider Bikes, those guys are awesome. They will hook you up with a trail map and some great ride advice.

Seriously, how is any of that single track :D...looks like multiple tracks to me.

That first pic made me fly out of my seat and grab my bike and phone and start booking a flight. I really wish I could get the time off to go ride that. The knee deep snow constantly is pissing me right off.

What trails did you ride? I think my favorite two were Porcupine Rim and Amassa Back (before the gas company screwed it up). I love riding Porcupine Rim counter-clockwise and finish up with a huge Iced Mocha from Mondo Cafe (COFFEE ,Still Legal In Utah). While you are there you might want to try to stay at the Lazy Lizard Youth Hostel (dorm style or camping) I met Tons of great people to ride with while staying there(from all over the world), or try camping in all the little canyons along the Colorado River

Great Pictures.
'06 will be my 5th season in CO, and I am on 3.5 hour from Moab, and I WILL go this year!!!
no excuses, just not exactly a destination for a family vacation, as the rest of the family are not huge mtb fans. Crested Butte has been a better destination for the family, spent two out of 5 summer vacations there.

+1 to that! :D It's been a few years since I've been down there. I still remember the beer being almost as strong as Gatorade. Porcupine Rim and Poison Spider were both fun trails, but I have to say I missed the trees and actual soil that I'm used to here in the Rockies. If I go back, I'm taking my road bike for the slickrock. :roflmao:

Like Richard Dreyfuss from Close Encounters, I have this urge to make mountain shapes out of mashed potatoes. "This means something. This is important. "

Well I haven't seen pics of any singletrack. Maybe there is some, not sure myself :D...Its hard to call something single track when you have more than 2ft of space on either side of you.

Tahoe's local to me and I've ridden in the Sierras much more than I've ridden in the Four Corners.

The remote, uncrowded (unknown to but a few handfuls of folks) singletrack routes that I have ridden in Moab rank higher than any of the great Tahoe routes that I ride.

Many of the trails around Moab have what is known as Cryptobiotic soil on the sides of the trail . One off-trail excursion can kill many years worth of nearly invisible growth . I would recomend a guided hike through Arches National Park before riding in the area . Most of the locals would be happy to explain why it's such a big deal to their very fragile environment.

hehe I am being semi sarcastic. The trails in moab look like good fun. Pete Fagerlin has some good movies of his trips there and he finds some great riding conditions.

when I went there ,I'd just spent 3 years living at over 9000' in Summit County CO. it was quite a change (all that oxygen + the lack of trees to hit)

Jerk!

As if Fagerlins pics and videos didn't make me jealous enough. I guess Moab and Sedona are how Arizona compensates for being generally unliveable.

Wow, Haters never cease to amaze me...To each his own I guess.

Thanks for the props. The first day we rode Sovereign the next day consisted of Amasa/X?X?X?X/Rockstacker/Jackson. Despite the intolerable amount of space on either side of my bars, I managed to have fun. That's good enough for me.

Most were taken with a Canon D60 digSLR, though the Amasa day I was carrying the small camera, a powershot a95.

A few more:

That second to last pic just looks like fun :)It is ! :D In my opinion , Moab is the best town for mtn. biking in the world . I think you need to make plans to go there during the Fat Tire Festival . I know I'm planning on going . The people you'll meet and ride with , are all there to ride , party , ride , party and so on. Save a pair of worn out Nevegal Stick-E's , I've got a feeling they would work great on Slickrock trail.

As I said in the pm, maybe next year Ishould try for the big three...

Sea Otter
Crankworx
Fat Tire Fest

This year I know for sure I am making crankworx, I will likely volunteer again.

Very overrated IMO, especially the riding part of it.

I would suggest the FFTF to compliment Moab's fest instead. Or the Downieville Classic if your set on Norcal.

I am not set on cal at all. Just an event I want to see. I wouldn't be going the to ride the whole time. I image its very similar to crankworx.

mtb-chop - no chance this year. I wouldn't be able to get the time off work during the busy season, at least without some notice.

Heading over Friday afternoon for a few days. Got to pick up some oat soda for Tim's guide service payment! Not sure exactly what he has planned just yet, but I'm sure it'll be splendid!

That first shot of yours down below is wonderful, btw.

Say "hi" to Tim for me and if he asks about those pics, make sure he knows that I cropped heavily to remove all horizons/means of identifying the location of the pics, per established protocol.

I'm jonesing for my usual late April trip. Have fun.
