Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - I <3 clothing

when i got in to work, weather dot com told me that it was 11 degrees, "feels like -5" here in Bridgeport. The Pequonnack River was frozen over for the first time this year. So I figured I'd give my clothes the respect and attention they deserve, by starting a thread about them.

my EMS fleece/liner gruppo is awesome-- polypro slim hat topped off with a fleece hat. polypro glove liners topped off with fleece glittens.

my thick cotton legwarmers keep my ankles not frostbitten. got them outta my friend lizxnn's freebox a way while back, making them w/o a doubt the best thing i've ever gotten out of a freebox.

my goodwill-bought old Cop street jacket. three zip-on-and-zip-offable layers-- windproof outer, waterproof liner, insulated inner. only need to wear a tshirt and a sweater beneath.

... it keeps me going till spring

I'm glad I'm not the only one with cotton legwarmers. I stole mine from my mother, but unfortunately one has mysteriously disappeared.

It seems to have disappeared several days after walking around the house in boxers/tshirt/legwarmers/homemade armwarmers while getting ready. My boyfriend gave me the eye and said he'd never been less attracted to me. No more legwarmer....suspicious.

For the longest time, I thought that <3 meant "a butt" or "to poop on". It was only Friday that I was told it was a heart. This changes everything.

oh man mrRed, you totally reminded me... i balls clothing, eyeballs clothing... i forgot to thank the ski goggles that i dug out of my parents' basement! i think they're bole. they're blue!

I also thought maybe they were boobs. Like "I poop on you!" or "I flash my tits at you!" Somehow, this means the same thing.

Anyway, clothes are awesome. I still stick with the same stuff as usual, just get my ass inside quicker. <3

Besides gloves, the most crucial article of clothing at this time of the year is a set of good shoecovers. I got a set of Descente shoecovers and they do an exemplary job of keeping my feet warm but not not. I can get away with wearing my normal socks, even at temperatures of 20 degrees and below. The only problem with 'em is a lack of a heel cutout. Sure, they're reinforced to the nines on the bottom, but eventually I will probably wear a hole there. That's not a big deal, as they're bound to get scuffed up through normal use anyway.

Shoe covers are only good if you run clipless, which is something I only sparingly bother with during school hours.

That, and the Under Armour that I got for Christmas. They make for a cozy ride when its bitter and windy like last night.

But if you're not using clipless, you're probably wearing shoes with better insulation than a pair of Sidis. I used to wear boots with clips, which absolutely negated the need for insulation of any kind.

I'm still dead set on fitting a set of Time ATAC cleats to a pair of Doc Martens. That's the best of both worlds right there.

Pants are way more important than gloves, and I've never worn shoe covers even in -10º, but yeah wearing clothes makes all the difference when it's cold outside.

I just ordered a pair of Lake MXZ-301's. (http://www.lakecycling.com/winter.html) They should take care of my winter cycling footwear needs for the forseeable future.

I wussed out today because my quads were still screaming from this (http://www.hyannismarathon.com/hm.php). The cold only emphasized the fact. Props.

at 20 and below i can't keep the feeling in my feet for more than about 1/2hour after that the toes get numb and painful. since my commute is 45 minutes that means the last 15 suck mooseballs (and the first 15 sucked mooseballs trying to get warm).

i may have to try shoe some good shoe covers but for now, i take the bus when its below 20...

Logical, but I wear my Jack Purcells every day, even if it is absolutely freezing outside. When the sole manages to separate from the rest of the shoe as it's begun to do, I think I'm going to get some handmade shoes. I know there are some companies out there that will take measurements via fax and within 3 weeks, you have a bombproof pair of shoes that are absolutely perfectly fitted. The other option is the independent shoe shop here in Oxford that sells some serious boots (Red Wing). I may look into that later this week..

Dude, my winter clothing rocks too. This last friday I was wearing:

A tshirt, a hoodie, fingerless gloves, cutoff jeans and dominators with socks.

It was kind of cold later on at night (around 65F!) so I broke out the vest. It's tough living in LA! We're getting a "storm" currently. We're expecting upwards of 5 inches of rain!

i'm with you on this one, the only special winter wear i bother with is thermals and full finger gloves, i know we don't have it as bad around here as some of you people, but everytime it's in the teens or the single digits and a bundle up i wind up getting to work all sorts of sweat soaked, this way i'm a little cold but not sweat soaked, also i think it's entertaining when i have ice in my beard

i'm tempted to get a pair for every day (bikers bum means there's always a couple of days i cant wear them cos they need a wash and i dont like walking around smelling of fart)

They're 100% waterproof, and my hands dont' get too soggy from sweatiness. I lost one at the party for 49ehouston last Friday, and I'm devastated. Austin/TimesUp ran the remaining one under a sink to test my "they're waterproof" boast, and he was all "whooooaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!"

Riding w/ ski goggles is the best! Although, I usually only do it in the early, early morning or late night 'cause I get wierd looks otherwise.

They're unbelievably light. Light enough that when I got the package I got all heated thinking that they had either left the boots out or shipped the wrong thing. Lighter than most sneakers even. Ugly, but I kind of butt that.

I grew up in northern Ohio, then moved to Tennessee. It doesn't ever get cold enough here to wear any more, and if I get chilly, I just pedal harder. I commute every single day, rain, shine or snow, in the same winter getup-
short sleeve shirt
hoody
wool socks
Converse All Stars
shorts or shants
Balaclava and mittens if it's really cold out

(I've got a uniform at work, and a laundry service, so it works out great.)

People down South are the biggest p*ssies on earth when it comes to the cold, and everybody seems to think I'm either crazy or a DUI for cycling to and from work in the winter. It's the summers here that can kill you, though.
