I know I've seen this thread before, but I can't get anything on the search function...

I'm planning on moving to philly this summer, at least for June/July/August. Is there any place that will hire me if I'm not sure about staying longer than that? How hard is it to get a messenger job? It only has to pay the rent...

Even if you know you're only staying at a job for a few months.. you should NEVER actually tell them that.

I worked for heavensent two years ago. Only reason to do it is if you like riding your bike in the city, and you don't really need any money. Pay is a joke. Better off financially delivering pizzas for dominoes or papa johns. I made decent money doing that as a teenager.

Heaven Sent sucks, but will hire anyone. Bottom of the barrel.
Rapid sucks, just a step or two above Heaven Sent.
Philly Express/One Hour are pretty rad, would probably hire someone off the street for semi-short-term if you've got some experience. Most others (AmEx, Timecycle, C&E, Vespid, anything in house) you can prolly forget about.

Rent's cheap all over and the city's easy to learn. If you've got no experience, just lie and say you've worked at Heaven Sent for a few months. If by chance you get up in One Hour, tell them 975 says yo.

i will just second that heaven sent sucks. the only good part was when one guy broke his bike and i took his morning steadies. come it at 730am and pick up 30 deliveries. everyone leaves you alone, no radio work, and im up like 100 dollars by noon.

but seriously if you wanna make real money and mess while being in the philly area, try DC. i worked at a bottom barrell there, but i took home 3.75 on every tag. first day in i made 65 dollars. not too shabby. DC is the place for newb messer. imho

I only know what I read and make up about messenger work, but FWIW housing in philly is way cheaper than DC.
