I'm putting together a demolition derby for a bike coop opening. Any suggestions on rules or etiquite? I want it to be hardcore, but not so hardcore that people don't want to participate. Also padding suggestions? I was thinking of using carpet scraps and ducktape. -will
The best demos I've seen or heard about were all on 16" kiddie bikes. Have everyone wear shin guards and carry broom sticks to jam in each other's wheels.

You're out if your foot touches the ground. No using hands (grabbing) or feet (kicking) is a pretty good rule, too. Make the circle smaller as bikes are eliminated. Decide whether or not bystanders can participate (usually by throwing things at the participants)...I agree it's better with small bikes (20" wheels or smaller).
Then it is just full contact footdown.
Real demo derby is elimination by broken bike. You can only hit other bikes when both feet are on the pedals.

Well ive never did anything like that before, but the foot down rule is crappy I think, people will be eliminated before any real fun happens, it say when the bike is un rideable you are eliminated.

Yeah, but you're saying that because your bikes are tanks and it would take explosives to render them unrideable :D

We used to play tag on tennis courts, everyone had a plastic 2 liter bottle tied with a some string to the bike. The last person with the bottle attached is the winner, but watch out for the net!

"Derby" usually takes two forms:
1) Footdown. Last person to put their foot down wins. No other rules. A good way to take someone out is to lift their front wheel off the ground with your leg, there is no recovery from this move. The person who wins is always the person who *avoids* conflict until there are only two riders.
If there is a crowd, the crowd should move the circle tighter every time there is opportunity to do so.
2) Demolition Derby. Last person who can physically ride their bike wins. No other rules. Wheel destruction is the usual route; even if you have mags your dropouts can be twisted off. Generally it's understood that we're all friends so no fighting dirty, but this is a brutal sport however it's played.
