Introductions - Forward Pedal Bicycles
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I am a 62 year old woman that is trying to get back in shape.
I have been vacationing in Florida and enjoy riding the bike that is available.
I would like to purchase my own bike. I saw a Giant (Suede) forward pedal bike at a bike store that I think would work for me. It is seven speeds so I could ride it here in the winter and also take it home to ride in New Jersey.
My question is whether this is a good bike for me. Is there another bike out there that has the same forward pedal that the Giant has. I like the idea that I can put my foot down and touch the ground. I have a longer torso then my legs and would like to know that I can stop, put my foot on the ground. Some times I am not confident enough to just push off.

For those who do not know the Giant Suede is an electric bike, listed on the Giant site for $1,000.00.
For the original poster you can get good non-electric bikes for a beginning commuter for a lot less than that. A recent issue of BICYCLING magazine ( found in most libraries - or see their web site) listed some good entry-level bikes for $250 and up. Add $100 or more for helmet, rack, bag(s), tools, etc, etc and you are ready to go. Lots of other threads have advise on how to get started. For some of us having an electric assist spoils the fun. I have NEVER seen an electric bike show up on a club ride. Please go by several different local bike shops (lbs) as well (if possible) some of the big stores like Performance and REI and look at their products.
Ma'm I am nearly your age and I do home health care work. I appreciate some of your concerns. I have heard of several kinds of bikes where you sit back a little with the pedals somewhat forward and your feet can reach the ground. I trust some people who know more about them will post here. Carried to the limit the pedal-forward idea becomes a recumbent bike. Please look at the Recumbent forum and see if there is something you like.

This thread has a long discussion of forward pedal/flat foot bicycles, mostly about the Electra Townie.
And a shorter discussion:

Electra Townie also has a forward pedal location but I dont think as pronounced is the Giant. It has an internal hub gear system which you may like for reasons of maintenance simplicity. Giant have a reputation for good bikes at reasonable prices. Ask about recumbents at bike shops and look here on the recumbent forum. Test ride as much as you can before you buy, because small differences in design can make a big difference in how the bike feels. Good luck.
Devinci as a bike called Lifestyle
good quality alloy frame and nice handling
so one more choice ( I regularly transform those in electric bike using the Bion-x module, very good result )
