Fifty Plus (50+) - Got my son a new road bike!

Saturday I took my son to the LBS and we bought him his first road bike. I wasn't having any luck finding a used unit (got impatient) and opted for an entry level new bike. We purchased a Trek 1000 SL in a beautiful bright orange! We did our first ride together yesterday and tho cold out, it was a blast. We're gonna have a LOT of fun together. Now I need to buy my daughter, his twin, a notebook computer to keep it even. (the joy of twins! which I'll really experience come college time in a few yrs!)

i was just admiring the paint job on that bike at a shop here in southern california - not more than an hour ago!

i'm sure your son will enjoy it immensely - it sure is a 'pretty' bike.

That's a great moment buying your child that first upscale bike. Enjoy your rides with him, those are great moments.

I just gave that bike a test ride yesterday. I love the color scheme, and the bike itself was quite fun to ride. Enjoy the time with your son! :)

Just pump those tires on his bike up to 30 psi and you'll do just fine. That's what I do when I want to beat my kids. :rolleyes:

oh i forgot; buy the daughter an apple ibook and you'll be the hero of the house

The 1000 is a nice bike and fun color. I think it is a good choice and what I may wind up getting my son next year. Enjoy your rides together!

I actually had to get myself a new bike since my son took over my old one!
I have a schwinn tempo that was resurrected from a basement of a school that closed. It had been spray painted black, the rims were out of true, but when I started to clean it up found that it was all 105 shimano!
I rode it for three years until getting a new 520, and then my son took it over. I had recently replaced the downtube shifters with barends and my fifteen year old fell in love with it. When looking for another bike to replace his we found another Tempo, with very little apparent use. It's now mine, and I look forwad to the "But dad, you have the fancy bike" arguments going away after the frst fifty miles together!
PS I can barely get my daughter on a bike!

My wife and I enjoy our Trek 1000s. Please allow me to suggest chaing the brake pads to Kool Stops as soon as possible. We upgraded the Bontrager tires to Conti Gatorskins very quickly as well. Great bike for anyone and I bet your son is quite proud of it.

I like it! Bright colors with understated logoing - very nice. Orange, I like it.
The clean bright rims and balance of black and 'bright' really give it a very 'light' feel and give a nice balance of 'old skool' and 'bling'.
He's a lucky kid

I like that! Been in the market for my 11 year old son. Still trying to find something used.
