Im thinking of applying for a job at Ford as a car detailer. Since Im trying to live as car free as possible, so working for a car company will sit on my conscience. On the other hand, Im an uni student so any work is good work.
So Im probably gonna go for it.
So as a bit of academic discussion how would working at a car company play on your living car free conscience?
And do you think Im doing the right thing? Money is not really an issue.
The fact that you will live car free has a far bigger impact than the work you will do at the dealership. I agree it is morally mirky, but we all make compromises to live in the world. You could find some ethical dilemma at any job. If your alternative is working for a fast food chain or a megalomart it woud have its own taint as well.

I'm from Michigan and had plenty of GM folks in my family (auto mfg, tool and die), an I have no disrespect for the hard work and jobs they did.
I don't like car "culture". i.e. unnavigable suburbs, unused enormous SUVs, one that chooses a job with a 1.5 hour commute each day for a modest increase in salary, and just poor decisions and life choice examples that come with such a percieved convenience.
so my disdain is the way our lives revolve around the car, not the practical uses a car or truck can provide to a family, farmer, or delivery driver, etc.
Bike to work and do your job well. My car free living makes it easier for the car people around me to find parking and more likely that they won't go car free themselves. Should I feel guilty about that?
When I ride out to the big box retailers in the suburbs I pass a BMW dealership where I almost always see a bike parked out back.

I work an IT job for a company that sells automobile Classified ads online and offline (magazines)...
I don't see a problem with it at all, but I do see the irony of working in a carcentric company while being carfree. I imagine some of the ppl who see me comming in everyday on the bike might think the same.

Consider: it's not as if, if you don't take the job, no one else will, and Ford will subsequently go out of business. Someone is going to be detailing those cars either way. If it's not a mental struggle for you, do it and enjoy it as much as you can.

Are you saying that jobs at Ford are a fungible commodity?
Are you saying that jobs at Ford are a fungible commodity?
Maybe. Ford executives might think so.
