Track Cycling - Anyone racing in Atlanta this season?

I just got my letter from Dick Lane Velodrome. Any members plan on coming out?

how far is DLV from Athens? i may be moving down there in August.

I was planning to drive up for 2 consecutive days of training later this month. I was looking at the hours and it looks like they're closed fridays and sunday. That's so week. But I did see March 25 & 26: Weekend Beginner Class. I've ridden piccolo, but I'd still consider myself a beginner. Anyone know if this costs anything? I'm short on funds and the $50 insurance fee is undoable if they're planning on me paying that.

Any thoughts, or ideas for going w/out needing to pay? Like could I just go.. is there a fence?

There is a fence, which I haven't seen since they renovated. People have hopped it before. I won't condone that because that's the kind of thing that gets a city sued when somebody gets hurt and East Point will close that 'drome in a heart beat. I can identify with being broke but consider the insurance fee your effort to support track cycling. A track not worth paying for will soon be a track not worth riding.

I can't understand how a drome would consider it ood practice to chare out-of-towners $50 for one training session. Does this mean that is dick lane wants to hold a regional race, everyone that hadn't ever ridden D L that wants to race has to throw in a $50 just to compete?

That really should be addressed and considered. If I lived in Atlanta a one time fee would be reasonable. But do they really think that a rather hefty up front fee is going to get anyone out there and try the drome?

Seems kind of nuts to charge that much. If they set up the training nights as a club training ride series and let anybody with a USCF license join the club in return for filling out a form, they could probably do the insurance for a couple bucks per ride.

Do you have any light on the rediculousness that is being discussed in this thread? Are there really requirements that I take a class even though I've ridden track before?

yes there are velodromes that require to take a class.

I have ridden a few tracks (10 total) here and abroad, it is not that they doubt you but they know you know the rules because they taught them to you.

It is good to see somebody's else perspective and you will learn something new.

Hi all,

It appears that there is some confusion re policies, costs and new rider requirements at the velodrome.

Our track is run managed by volunteer riders and we all try hard to make it accessible and affordable for everyone including out-of-state riders.

A couple of things right off the bat: If you have been track certified at another velodrome, going through the new rider course will probably not be required. Otherwise, going through a new rider session is mandatory. Please understand that this is for the safety of everyone.

It's not good practice...it's necessity. People didn't come ride the track in numbers when it was free, so you're fooling yourself if you think the cost of insurance is keeping people away in droves. Racers have insurance from USA Cycling, I believe. If you compare the number of people coming from out of town to the number coming from in town you'd see you're not worth catering to, no offense.
ADT Center requires a class too, I think. You have to understand they probably have NO budget from the city. If somebody got hurt and sued them they'd close that track before you could dial 800-lawyer!

The assumption that it will cost an out-of-town rider $50.00 for a one day training session at the DLV is not correct.
