Foo - Problem saving in Open Office

When I had windows and open office, saving in the .doc format was easy. I would simply select the file type from a drop bar. Well now using Linux, how do you save open office writings as a .doc??

Is there an "Export" option? Perhaps it is so 'antiquated' as to differentiate between the 2, or perhaps you just punch in the ".doc" file extension. I'd need a screenshot of the file menu and the save as menu

Mine has the option to save as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP under the file type when saving.

Okay this is odd. There is an export under the file menu, but when i move my mouse over it, it closes the application instantly.

Are you running the latest version? Have you reinstalled?

Save as... you should see a drop-down menu offering all the supported file formats in the dialog's filename text field...

I had that same problem With Red Hat 9, except it was by popping open several menus and hovering over a certain menu. When its KDE that does it, its a tad more disastrous though ;)

Welcome to the wonderful world of MS Word. :p If you're lucky you will open up Open Office and it will say "Open Office has detewcted that Open OFfice has shut down. Open Office has recovered (x) amount of files. And then show when they were last saved which was 30 seconds prior to crash.

You should only touch beta software if you have time to waste, understand what beta is, and understand that anything and everything you can do could be lost at any time what so ever.

- btw, i doubt you've lost any work... and you should set Oo for auto-save of backup docs (although i'm so used to Ctrl-s [Cmd-s] by now that i do it unconciously)... check your default path in the client and you shoud find your work (unless you've been typing for hours on end into a new document)...

well beta is what came with my fedora distro
I am breaking from the paper for a minute, was going to see if I can install the newest version. So i download the 106MB tar.gz file, locate all of the separate RPMs. ANd what do you know, i think i've found a dependency loop. There are 10 "open office cores", i try to install #1 and it requires the other 9..

default client appearance setup for os x 10.3.9 (Panther)... works fine for me, although YMMV...

I thought the whole point of RPMs were to eliminate all of the crap as long as you could get the RPM to install or the RPm installer to not crash when trying to uninstall.

okay I cant even get to save as now. I go to file, and as soon as my mouse goes to save as, all open office windows shut down inmmediately. I tried to do a copy and paste to save my work, it elimiates what is in the clipboard!!!
I've never been this close to reformatting my hard drive in NTFS format, and installating something remotely reliable such as windows

10.4 (Tiger) is current, so Panther is last year's release (i'm running on an iBook G4)... latest Tiger desktop is very nice, but most of the time i just use vanilla X11 (nice to have GNOME menu via gnome-panel on an OS X desktop; KDE fans use the kicker client)...

i also use X11 on my XP notebook via Cygwin (after deleting as many win apps as possible); this way i can put my Fedora server's desktop on my XP desktop and ignore Windoze...

I'd love to see the debug stack when that crashes. Kind of amazing that a bug like that still exists in whatever underlying sub-system that handles menus, almost 3 years later.

Oh, I can't stand GNOME. Whenever I use *nix it has to be KDE. I still would have problems coping. I've not used Linux as a desktop, however, in probably 2 years. I used an iMac in frequently for testing in 2005. I need to get another cheap, but decent Mac system running an updated version of OSX, or perhaps see if i can run Mac of Intel on a VPC. I wonder if that has been done reliably yet.

You should learn to dual or triple boot. This way you can go back and forth between Windows and your favorite *nix distro. Probably less frustration and then you can figure out which one is good for you for certain tasks.

Probably the only thing I have ever liked about *nix is the fact that grub, with alot of hacking, and having to know nerds who know, badly documented features of grub, you can get it to dual boot about 8 oses on 4 hard drives. Dual booting a windows drive on a sevondary slave partition is imipossible unless you do some hacking to reroute the drive so the bios thinks its the master :p I don't even remember how i did it anymore. I only remember that you would make say hde be hda

yeah. Its an underlying subsystem. In this case, whatever happens to be handling the menu appearance and events. That's why I said it would be interesting to see the debug stack rewound when it crashes

I think I would have more luck typing papers in thunderbirdYou can get a free trial of MS Office 2003 from Microsoft's site, I think it's 60 days? That might help you get through your paper, assuming you are either up on your emulator stuff or have your dual-boot set up.

If you need to use Open Office right now you could download Knoppix Linux. You don't have to install it. It runs right off the CD and includes Open Office. Make sure you burn it as a bootable CD and not a regular data CD.
