Road Cycling - First Ride Report

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Today was my first ride on my road bike. It consisted of five minutes on the bike and 15 min walking/cursing at it. The problem: the pedal came off while I was going down a hill  . A nice gentleman on a recumbant stopped to help, proving again that cyclists are a generous bunch :D .
Lucky for me the lbs is five minutes from my office and it only cost .52 to get the problem fixed (I was missing a bolt). The mechanic told me I was lucky I didn't crash since my problem could have caused a very painful accident.
Anyway with only five minutes of riding I have determined that I love my new ride and can't wait for lunch time tomorrow so I can get out again.
And I will post pictures as soon as I can get my friends camera.

It was the crank (I am still learning the names of all the parts so forgive me if I don't have it right). I am going to put together a check list tonight, so I don't end up in the same mess again. The funny thing is, the Kelly parts were what I was worried about and those worked smoothly.
Keep an eye on the crank that came off. When that happens, the tapered(assumpton as to type) part that fits onto the bottom bracket spindle can be damaged and if that is the case, that crank arm may continually come loose. There are inexpensive dust covers that screw into the extractor threads on the crank arms that can prevent the crank bolts from coming completely loose. They serve another purpose in keeping said threads clean.

Be careful of those recumbent men. The next you know, they'll want you to lay down with them. ;)
