For a variety of reasons we are selling my wife's Santana Marathon tandem (1985 model) and could use some advice... In south Louisiana there's not a huge market for tandems. (I just posted a note in the For Sale forum)

Any other good websites or boards to recommend?
How about references for pricing and what someone would be willing to pay? (we did talk to someone at Santana, who might be biased :)
Other advice? or thoughts to getting the word out? (she had her son list it on eBay)

many thanks!

Tandem looks good; but with older technology and 27" wheels the price that Santana quoted is rather biased and overly optimistic.
Your start/asking price is a bit more realistic.
You can alswo list it with the Tandem Club of America; if you are a club member there is no charge for the ad.
Good luck!

You can try:

That is where we found a used Santana S&S triple.

I also think that $1,500 is unrealistic. But even $1,000 may be too high.

Good luck!

shoot. My girlfriend would flip if I bought that - she's been trying to find a way to ride with me, and a tandem would be perfect. No way I've got room in this apartment, though :( best of luck.

One more thing, your posting title on ebay says: Santem .... and not Santana. I would correct that if I could.

I bought one of similar vintage on e bay for $800 shipped a couple of months ago. It was in excellent but not perfect condition.

1991 (?) Santana Tandem

If your 1991 has 700c wheels, a freehub, and indexed shifting, it would have significantly more value and utility than this 27" freewheel (and possibly non-indexed) bike.

Does seem that the ebay starting price is overly optimistic, but seller may get lucky. Compare, though, with my local craigslist which is showing a 1996 Cannondale + travel case for $950, and a 1992 Burley for $600...

Good luck!

-Greg, who feels the pain with his old-spec'd 1986 single, and whose 1993 tandem is just new enough to avoid these component inconveniences.

Honestly, I think you are expecting a bit much for the sale of a 21-year-old bike. And going to Santana isn't a good place for an estimate. Call a better bike shop and ask whether they carry and sell used tandems. Better yet, call a shop that rents tandems, because they might buy them for their rental service, and they might also sell tandems. That selling price would be a bit more realistic.

Tandems are like recumbents, and have a small market to begin with. An older bike with older components is going to have a tougher time moving, unless very low priced. Sophisticated tandem users are probably invested in 700c bikes already and a bike like yours might be OK as a trainer, but with the wheel size and the fact that it doesn't collapse with S&S couplings as do many newer tandems would make it harder to travel with. Someone wanting to try a tandem on a lark wouldn't want to spend a lot.

TCA Classifieds has an '85 Santana Elan listed for $800 obo
EBay had a '93 Santana Visa that sold for $835
Ebay had mid-90's Santana Rio that sold for $1,250
Ebay had a '98 Santana Arriva that sold for $1,580.25 (a bit high IMHO due to condition)

Probably a better set of numbers to benchmark for evaluating offers.

Actually I need to change my signature [edit: just changed it!]. Santana thinks my bike is of mid-80s vintage. It has 27" wheels and a seven-speed freewheel. It does have indexed shifting thanks to Shimano barcons and an XT rear derailleur, which were obviously changes from stock.

If you really really want to sell fast.... I snatched this vintage Santana up this morning for $300. Yup at that price it wasn't hanging around in the seller's garage for any longer than it took me to drive over there.
It's already in pieces. The Specialite cranks and rings are shined up to where I can see myself.
Anybody know if Santana still has touch up paint for this old fella. Also does anyone know where I might get just the replacement brake pads, not the shoes. They look like they woud glue on. The brakes are finned Mathauser. I also need Mafac tandem brake lever hoods in black. Thanks

It does look vintage :).

There may be other cheaper places but for hard to find items I like The Third Hand (www.thethirdhand.com)

Enjoy the bike.

Just a follow up on our tandem, we decided to re-list it on e-Bay with a starting price of $700 (see link in signature). Thanks to all who responded with the feedback!
