Fess up: do you ride a "pickup?" I'm curious how many xtracycle users are on the forum, what your bike's set up is, where you live and how you use it.

I live just north of Colorado Springs, CO and unfortunately the bike currently isn't getting too much use. I hope to do some camping trips with it this summer, tho. Previously it was my marketmachine in Cleveland.

The bike is based on a 26" mtb with wideloaders, and a tray bein.

Soon another xtracycling Clevelander will relocate to this area.

Edit: the photos below are from xtracycle.com and are from Iowa City and Seattle.

I have one with a pretty basic setup: Snapdeck, Deluxe Freeloaders on a MTB with slicks.

From where do you hail? Is it your main ride, or special occasions/shopping?

I have one here in Seattle, and I was actually part of the group in the third photo in your OP, although my bike is not visible in the photo. It is an MTB with 26" wheels, and I also have the wideloaders. I use it a few times a week for grocery shopping and errands, and occasionally for commuting although I usually use a lighter bike for that purpose.

0o0ps I Missed that part of your post.
I’m from western Massachusetts. The Xtracycle is my only ride. (no car either!) I’ve kept it stock since I got it last spring but I’m now in the process of swapping my aluminum frame with a steel one and going rigid. Hopefully soon it will be burly and complete with lights and fenders for all riding situations. I love my Xtracycle and the company but I think the add-ons are pretty expensive. I’ll make my own Wideloaders and Footsies. Once my Xtracycle Is pimped I’ll probably buy a cheap roadie for jaunts through town and country but keep the Xtracycle as my main ride.

o, man, where to start?

bought my first in 2000. had it hooked to a crummy MTB because i didn't want to invest much in what seemed at the time like a longshot proposition. i put my BOB trailer up for sale almost immediately after trying it out. and then my other bikes lost their racks because i figured that if something bigger than a carradice saddlebag needed carrying, i'd carry it with the xtracycle.

then i saw an ad for a 1993 bianchi super grizzly with xtracycle and all the xtracycle accessories i wanted for only $250, so i bought it. and it was sweet, and i upgraded it with lots of choice bits including a brooks that i had about 15K on, and that's when it got stolen - unlocked in the closed garage of the house we were renovating.

spoiled for the better ride, i then i put the original xtracycle kit on a 1996 specialized stumpjumper comp with tange prestige tubing and it was the sweetest thing ever. and while i used it plenty, it was never my main ride - for that i wanted a lighter faster thing. i always saw the xtracycle as a utilitarian car alternative, and not something somebody would want as a main ride unless they could have only one bike (not that that isn't a noble arrangement).

so pleased with what i saw as a revolutionary product (and still do), i decided i needed to hitch my wagon to the concept somehow, and began to invest in ways to improve and expand upon it. tired of hauling my wife and child up san francisco hills, i began to investigate xtracycle-specific electric assist (http://todd.cleverchimp.com/blog/cp/scale.html), and also purpose-built frames (http://todd.cleverchimp.com/blog/xt/xtravois.html).

a few years and lots of investment later, i'm the guy behind Cleverchimp: http://cleverchimp.com/ . i ride assisted xtravois about 100 miles a week hauling family and running errands involving cargo, and ride a regular bike maybe 30 miles a week when i have less than 30 pounds to carry, and am not in a hurry. our family has never owned a car and we plan never to.

we moved from san francisco to portland, oregon 14 months ago. great move.

Wow, that is an awesome bike. :) Disc brakes, multispeed electric assist, cargo capacity...

Fewer people would have cars if cargo bicycles were that nice.

Cool...I forgot to say that I added disc brakes and have used the bike in the fall as adog walker: added a 'springer' to it.

OMIgod: what a great deal and a sad steal!

I don't have one, but my neighbor does - here's one of the uses he has for it:

I have one. It's attached to a mountain bike...a Marin Eldridge Grade. I've had it for about two years. I use it lots. So much that the right side freeloader has developed a tear. That made me sad. In Houston. Texas.

I'm in northern Virginia and have one on a Giant Boulder SE with Big Apple tires. It's for occasional use when I want to haul bulky stuff like 4X5 camera gear. The setup is faster and easier than hiking and is great for getting to areas only accessible by fire roads and easy trails.
