An article ran in today's Tribune announcing the famous mall the Blues Brothers smashed up in their movie is going to be demolished. It's been vacant for years.
WIth that in mind I got out my old copy of Briefcase Full Of Blues and let the good times roll. You know what? It's a pretty good record. While they took heat for being rip-offs, they do a good job of paying homage to the genre. They are clearly having a good time and the mood is infectious.
Put it on for a spin.
The Blues Brothers weren't the first band or the last to cover traditional R&B and Blues songs. British Bands like the Who, Rolling Stones and Beatles got their start covering the same songs, many bands today still cover these songs. It's great music, why the hell not?

The Blues Brothers had some TOP NOTCH musicians backing them. It's invariably going to sound good when you have Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn, who were part of the Booker T & The MG's. Booker T & The MG's were basically the house band on a bulk of the killer hits for the Stax and Volt labels.
If you want a GREAT box set of the Memphis sound, check out The Complete Stax/Volt Singles.
Yeah, even w/ Belushi and Akroyd fronting, the music is pretty good stuff.
+1 on randya's mentioning of the British Invasion bands who mined through the blues for inspiration (more so the Stones, who even recorded a record w/ Muddy Waters back in the day).
