the Aussie hamburger from a fish 'n' chip shop, complete with optional egg and beetroot, used to be the big thing, but we've had McDonalds since the mid '70s, and Hungry Jacks, etc, for ages. :(

at least Dennys died a natural death :)

Hungry Jack's = Burger King for those of you who are wondering what Hungry Jack's is.
What are you complaining about? Foster's has been sold here for years and people think it's cool to drink it cuz it's Straaayin fa beah mate!

Only if you eat the KKs and drink the Starbucks. (Actually I like the coffee but I can make a whole pot cheaper than they can sell me a cup.) You probably already had both donuts and coffee before these guys moved in. The homoginization of the world marches on. It's a durn shame on many levels.

What is this "natural death" that Denny's died there?

Most places I've lived they would become Chinese or Indian restaurants. What happened to the old properties?

By the way, you should check out some of the cute pets we have over here. The best are rabbits. I think they'd be a big hit over in Australia! If you don't like cute little furry things, how about our toads?

It's cheaper than beef at the moment. Taste is stronger than beef steak but milder than venison IMO. The meat is very lean, needs to be cooked rare.

If you tried a tin of dog food it's likely to contain roo meat!!!

Do you remember that story from about 2-3 years ago in the north-east... New Jersey I think. Some cops got busted for taking the police helicopter on DONUT RUNS!!! They'd fly to the Krispy Kreme, land in the parking-lot across the street. One guy would run out and grab a baker's dozen, hop back in and they'd take off. Ended up having to reimburse the department for the operating costs of the helicopter on those runs... :)

Hmm, let's see...Dunkin Donuts has better coffee that Starpukes, better donuts that Greasy Kreme, and costs less. Not to mention, no waiting in line behind an indecisive, self-absorbed, "venti-chai-latte-non-fat-froth-a-thon" dweeb, who brought his laptop and/or Architectural Digest to a coffee shop. I'd say the Aussies have gotten the short end of the stick. :D

Dunkin Donuts does have yummy lattes. I wish we had them here. *sigh* Still, Venti Nonfat Tazo Chai sounds good. Think anyone would notice that I'm just playing solitaire on the laptop? :D

Good lord. When I lived out East, the worst directions I could ever get were, "turn left at the Dunkin' Donuts." Really? Which one? 'Cause there's like 40 within cat-swinging distance.

Still... great, great coffee.

Nope...not in this part of Canada. I do stop every time I have to cross the border though. The area is covered with them so you'd think sooner or later they'd bleed over here. Sadly, though, Tim Hortons would probably kick their tushes. Starbucks is really the only coffee place around here to stand up to the competition.

Same in this part of the US. OOB!

Tim Horton's may be bleeding its way south. I saw one in Michigan, and along the border in NY and Ohio. And since they're planning to IPO, it may be to fund a southward expansion. It'd be Wendy's attempt to capture a larger market share. Dunno if it'll work though. May end up suffering the same demise as Canadian Tire when they expanded into the US, unless they do what they did in Canada and put Wendy's and Tim Horton's side by side.

As for Krispy Kreme in Oz, try the vanilla creme donuts. Sinfully sugary, but oh so good. :D

I used to live in Michigan....where Wendy's, who also owned Hardees, turned all of the Hardees restaurants into Tim Hortons. The amusing thing is that, despite the exchange rate, the price for varied items are the same in Canada and Michigan.

I don't think Krispy Kreme will last too long in Australia. In my suburb they opened the first one in the country a while ago outside the Panthers Leagues Club. At first the lines were out the door and around the block. Now you hardly ever see anyone there. The novelty wore off very quickly. Once you realise that there is more than your daily allowance of fat in one doughnut they don't appeal as much. Still taste good though.

Not in my neck of the woods. Can't say I remember seeing such a place in my domestic travels, either. Sounds like a another of those restaurants generically called "feeding troughs", assuming that Smorgys has something to do with smorgasbord.

They do taste great, but I just have no plans of actively seeking out a Krispy Kreme. It's not enough of a tempting snack when you think about how much fat you're eating. If I'm going to have that much fat in one sitting, it ought to at least be a sitting that will decently fill me up!

I consider that a small snack. The Krispey Kremes are way to expensive though. I'll just go with eating thrice as many regular donuts with my dollar. Oh man...now I'm seriously craving donuts. I swear, I haven't been full for a second since ash wednesday, and I've been eating like a pig.

Haha...an Aussie guy called me "cheeky." That definitely made my day! :roflmao:

We had a Krispy Creme factory/store here. It lasted less than 18 months. It closed along with a number of other KC outlets. Someone should have told them you just don't mess with Tim Horton.

Did you see the lineups when it first opened? We stopped by just to try it and had to wait in an insane line out the door. I think it's ultimate downfall was it's inaccessibility though. Donut buying is probably mostly giving in to impulse....having to go through a strip mall parking lot at a busy intersection by the time you made up your mind to go, it was just too much work to get back around and in there.

Is this the one by Skarbro Town Centre? I thought their downfall was the free donuts and not enough paying customers. I actually liked their donuts compared to Tim Hortons.

Nope....this is by Devonshire Mall. They did give a lot of free doughnuts though, didn't they? That always surprised me.

Edit

Actually, I don't know the name of the strip mall complex in which it was situated. I know that you pull in and had to go by a Future Shop and McDonalds to get to Krispy Kreme. If it is that town centre, sorry.
