We just completed our first unsupported tour on the triplet. Just me and my young stoker, my 4.5 yo daughter. We pulled a fully loaded 2 wheel trailer. I’m guessing a good 40 lbs of gear. We went from Independence MO to Weston MO on Tuesday, camped overnight, and came back on Wednesday. It was 45 miles each way.

I consider it a great success. 45 miles is the longest either of us had gone before, our previous was 40 and that was not pulling a load of gear. The first day we kept a 12.5 mph average and the second 11.8. The worst part was the mile of gravel road that we didn’t know about until we were on it. The good news was that another cyclist came along and chatted with us. Jamie does not like the bumps so we ended up walking half of this on the way home.

It was a lot of work circling our legs for so long, left at 9:30, arrived at 3:30, but we took enough stops that it wasn’t too bad. The first day, Jamie didn’t complain about anything other than the above mentioned dirt road until mile 35 when she said she needed another break. We didn’t go overly fast, but we made it and we rode very consistently.

I should also say that the camping was great. Perfect temperature, very quiet, fun campfire, etc. This is always THE MOTIVATOR for Jamie. She loves camping, which is great because this old boy scout loves it too.

I definitely think that we are ready for the Bike Across Kansas, which we have on our calendar for June 10-17. I’m sure this is only the first of many tours we will do, though I think we will either wait for a 3 day weekend or go somewhere a little closer next time so there is more time to play around and sight see.

The picture quality didn't turn out so well being limited to 100k. In the original, you can tell that Jamie's smiling.

That so awesome! Too bad you could not talk somebody into taking the 3rd seat.

Do you pick up hitchhikers? Or put a sign on the empty seat 'help wanted'?
Seriously, looks like quite the rig and a great way for family togetherness/bonding!
Congrats to both of you . . . way to go!

That is freakin awesome. My daughter turns 3 in a month and loves bicycles. I can't wait. although we only have a tandem, and my wife won't like being left behind. Our son is due in May so I guess 2 tandems will be in our future.

By the way, shouldn't the title be "Our first tandem tour?" :)

I agree, that is awesome! If I had more money than I actually do, I would have a triplet (hmmm, maybe even a quad), S&S coupled. Do you ever motor transport your triplet? If so, how (rack, internal, other?)?

I guess the weather was not bad? I thought Kansas to be a little colder this time of year (30's - 40's). I don't think I could talk my kids into riding in that kind of weather for 6 hours. I think it would have to be more like the 50's.

Congrats on the ride, looks like it was mucho fun.

Djembob02,

What a great story, and congratulations. You are to be commended for being such a great dad, too. These days you just don't often see parents developing relationships with their children the obvious way you have. Your daughter will long remember these kinds of experiences and carry them with her for the rest of her life. I'll bet she really loves her daddy...Good on you!!

In response to motor transport: yes, I have transported on the top of our CRV using a roof rack that I made out of square steel tubing and a fork skewer truck mount. It is very sturdy, just like the Atoc (spelling) tandem carrier. I have also put in the back of our old Dodge Caravan with the seats out. Problem with this is there's no room for people.

As to the third person, I made a special seat for a stuffed animal. We usually bring along a stuffed animal when we ride without Mom. Mom rides with us for fun and little exercise but is not really a cyclist yet. So she is not ready for 4 hours on a bike seat. Anyway, when I asked what stuffed animal she wanted to bring, Jamie said "none". I asked if she at least wanted to bring her kangaroo, the stuffed animal she always sleeps with. She said "no". I asked "how come?" she said "Your much cuddlier Daddy" Wow, that was a great moment. I think she loves me!!! We zip two sleeping bags together and cuddle-up.

In response to weather, this has been a warm winter in general, but the last three days have been very unseasonably warm, highs in the mid 70's. I just had to take advantage of it.

Thanks for all of your encouragement, and I hope I have inspired a few.
