Commuting - Anyone else need to lock up helmet and shoes with bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I normally carry all my cycling gear with me...in a messenger bag that seems to grow at an exponantial rate as i get more and more geeky with my bike. With shoes, gloves, lights, pump, and helmet...it's a PITA to have to carry it all around.

I have a basket attached to my rack to help carry my 'stuff' but doenst allow me to keep things secure. Does anyone else have some experience with trying to keep your gear locked up?

I found this case and thought it might be an option...bolted to my rack...with maybe a padlock and cable to try and keep all but the most determined thieves from ripping me off.

any thoughts...(besides "5lbs??? Are you friggin insane???")

You can get backpack proctectors that are made of a steel cable net. A determined thief could eventually get through, but it might work for you...

Since you're thinking about bolting something to your rack, why not try out something like this: http://otivia.com/cargocache.htm

Because I also use my bike for longer fitness rides and have a car seat for my son, I couldn't go for something that's permanently mounted to my rack. If things change and I get a road bike, I might just put this on my commuter.

It says it only works down to -10 degrees. I don't know what fails. Maybe it gets brittle and breaks. I don't know what temperatures are like where you are, but we get a few days colder than that around here.

After seeing the link from jnorcross...i had an epiphany. That's the perfect solution for me.

Instead of grabbing the $95 Otivia, i found some 'new in the box' scooter trunks on Ebay for $15 bucks. Now i can put one on each of my commuter bikes...

Thanks guys, gave me just the solution i was looking for.
