View Full Version : I need a shorter stem - maybe???

When I got the first road bike I'd owned in many years (in 1999) the LBS told me to do a stand over to determine what frame size I needed. They ordered a 58cm Raleigh R600. Since I was sorta new to cycling I let them make all these decisions.
It is now almost 4 years later and I think I'm a little more knowledgeable.

In 2001 I got another bike (from another bike shop) and they did the entire FIT process.

Now that I have been riding both for a while the new bike "feels" much better fit-wise than the Raleigh. The Raleigh seems too long - like I'm stretched out too far.
I know I could change the stem so the handlebar would be higher but want to keep the "traditional" lower position.
I've changed stems from the original 12 cm to an 8 cm model but I still feel like I'm reaching.
I've measured the distance from the front of the seat post to the brake hoods and the Raleigh is much longer.

My question is, does anyone know where I can purchase a shorter (less than 8cm) 1" threaded stem sorta like this? Thanks.

Try [url]www.branfordbike.com They can be had at least as short as 5cm. That's really too short for the bike size and shorter gets squrrelier. Not my idea of a good time.

OK ....difference is in what they 'carry' and what they can get. They can get anything in the QBP cataloge, and that was my refrence. you can call them at 1 800 272 6367 m-w-f 12-4pm eastern time and ask whats available, get a part #, and price and then order on line.Profile makes one in a 60 and www.nashbar.com carrys alot of the profile stuff. www.rivendellbicycles.com carries the nittos that are available in shorter lengths. You need to know your bar diameter. Old road stuff ranged from 25.4,, to 26.4mm and most current stems are 25.8/26mm,but other clamp diameters are available too.

Since my 57cm C-T Peugeot frame is a bit too tall and too long for me, I have replaced the original stem with a very short-reach Nitto. The bike certainly looked better with a longer-reach stem, but my only other choice was to sell it, and it is a splendid commuter, with a resilient ride and clearance for 700Cx28mm tyres.

I removed the Nitto 22.2mm stem from a very small-framed Fuji road bike (a $10 yard sale treasure) and sanded it down to 22.0 for the Peugeot steerer tube.

I got an email from a friend who suggested I try using a quill adapter

my stem is 60mm and it's threaded - I'm pretty sure it's a profile design one.
