I work for an engineer who doesn't want to do anything except see if the company can save three pennies each month through a new phone company. He doesn't do his field work. He doesn't layout any plans. He doesn't fill out any drafting requests. He doesn't give me any definites on anything he asks me to do. He wants me to do his engineering for him and figure out every scenario. He rambles incoherently about this or that and goes off on wild tangents. He’s confusing, egotistical, and lazy. When he gives me something he doesn’t explain it correctly. It’s like I need a fricken crystal ball to figure out what he wants. And when I think I’m 90% done, he changes his mind or tells me I did something he didn’t want. Or visa versa. I’m loosing my gosh dang brain. And it’s like he’s selling me his projects. “Oh, So-and-so will be happy if we do it this way. Mr. Pooty-bottom, will really appreciate how much effort we put into it. Well, Dong needs them yesterday, if you know what I mean.” I could give a squirrel’s fart. Just tell me WHAT you want and WHEN, dang it. And it’s always last minute, 4:59 crap that bugs me. THEN – oh man this kills me – he’ll push someone else’s stuff to the side to get his crap ahead of it and explain some sort of irrational excuse why he needs to be in front of it. I’m going freaking nuts here.
Thank you.

Is he the boss's son, or something? Why not report his ass? Worthless is one thing, pulling another's slack is another. If it actually effects YOU, go to HR or whatever and get the guy in trouble, supposedly that's what a rigid, top-down hierarchy is for.

The programming engineer, and he's the most senior engineer, who sits directly behind me clips his toenails at his desk. From time to time, you'll hear click, click... click... click... click :o

- have you read Dilbert?

(as an aside, the wife unit just got out of a bad work situation much, much worse than yours... i don't know how she does it, but she always manages to come out smelling like a rose, pooping crushed pineapple, and gets a pay raise in a bigger, better deal [aka BBD]... i guess i should just be grateful she still wants me as a husband?)

DAng dude. At the last place I worked at, we rented offices in a 16 story building. And these 'programmers' for another consulting company rented the office right next to my boss. And they would ALWAYS clip their fingernails, and their toenails, and god knows what else. All i know is you always heard that clicking sound and it drove my boss crazy :roflmoa:

I've got Termite's at my command.....is his house made of wood?

Reminds me of a true story about a highly-acclaimed biologist.

Someone asked him what his thoughts on God were.

The biologist replied, "He seems inordinately fond of termites."

I'm going to the CEO today. I've gotta get this situation straightened out, or I'll blow my top. Unfortunately, the guy I'm going to complain about owns almost half of the company - like 48% or something. Still yet, he's killing me.

I'll keep you all informed. Either here or at home when I walk the heck out.

Gee this guy works in the field. It sounds like he should be a college professor. :)
We have a project manager like that here. It is all passive aggressive crap. He can’t ask for what he wants ahead of time so he waits until the last minute to spring his requirements on you. Then it becomes your crisis. Usually, we have to scramble to get it done because we can’t let our customers down. Arghhhhhhhh!!

I'd make up a form for him to fill out - with all his requirements on it. I'd include a place for him to sign, the date and time he asked for it, and the date and time it "Needs" to be done. Include a place for the CEO to sign whenever it is a last-minute request, or he wants to bump another project. (make sure you run this part by your CEO first)

If he wants to change something he already gave you, hand him another form.

I did just this. He told one of the guys here that he ain't gonna fill it out. The son-of-a-pup kills me. If he's held to something then he has to follow through with it. He doesn't want to.

He just stood behind me for over an hour flipping out on alignment plans that he can't figure out because he never looked at them until just now. He's a loon. I'm going to the CEO today or by Monday.

It's absolutely getting worse. I don't want to dislike anyone. But he's becoming my #1.

I actually think he blamed the project on me because he hasn't been to the field. I'm going to find out and scream bloody murder. It will be known. I will make my points clear and it will not be pretty.

I used to work for a guy like that.

Eventually his own ego was his downfall....he tried to make an example of me in front of the CEO, and I beat him at his game, while being perfectly professional the entire time.

Bottom line is...if an engineer doesn't do his job enough, the tech will know more, and the tech will make a fool out of the engineer if they start talking out of their rectum.

I say just do the right thing, and if he keeps getting all stupid about it, then make it clear that from that point on you either a)get email or hard-copy of the expectations for this paper OR b)he does it himself and shuts the hell up. Job position is not an excuse to act that way.

Its funny how **** always rolls down hill. Its certainly more entertaining to complain to us than to actually tell your boss that you think he could change the way he does things and get more work done.

I have one of these guys at work. He thinks he's gods gift to office furniture, and is constantly butting in to what the rest of the engineers are working on. Of course, he can't model a flat rectagular piece of steel in ProE. It was sooooo sweet to successfully do something he said couldn't be done...

I wish you well. I'm not sure how things are between him and the CEO - you might have a chance, or you might need to prepare your resume (if you haven't already). Plan 'B' could be to document the things he asks you for and send a weekly report to the CEO. Another possibility would be to have the work assignments go through someone else - at least for the purpose of prioritizing them. You could do this or just have the CEO dictate that all your assignments need to be in writing.

This is quite a sad situation for you, as it sounds like your environment would be pretty nice if this clown wasn't around. Are you sure you don't have some dirt on him to blackmail him into filling out your forms? :D Oh well. It sounds like you're resourceful enough to either get this fixed, or move on to something comparable.
