Foo - ATTN: Mac Users.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What the hell is wrong. I get these wierd font characters when browsing certain sites in Safari. I can then open the same site in Firefox and everything is fine. Please help. I like Safari more, well, except for this little problem.

The google ads across the top of BikeForums are that way right now. I guess I better upgrade.

What did you blur out and what has the funky characters?
I'd guess its a font substitution gone awry but there isnt anything there to get any info off of . Try finding a site that does the same thing but doesnt have any sensitive info and preferably one that is publicly accessible .

I didn't blure it out. That's what it does. That's the problem I am talking about. It's wierd characters that can't be read.
edit: Try it now with the bigger size.

Flagrant System Error

Virus = Very Yes

This is typical of a font problem. What's happening is that the webpage is specifying a font your system doesn't have so your browser attempts to substitute a suitable font. Unfortunately it failed. Try changing your font substitution or if you can, have the browser ignore webpage specified fonts.

Wrong text encoding?
kennethalan
03-02-06, 11:29 PM
That doesn't compute Dave.
I forget - does Safari let you set a default character encoding in the preferences? That might be it. But I'm not really a mac guy - I just use them at work.

It does let you. What should I select?
kennethalan

right now it says:
Western(mac OS)
You have a corrupt font cache. There are utilities that'll clear the font cache for you and take care of the problem, just google it as I can't think of the names of the utils at the moment.

Here, use this. (http://homepage.mac.com/mdouma46/fontfinagler/)

Yea, cause PCs never have weird bugs or issues...
It should let you run it a couple of times to "test" it without paying.

did you mess with any fonts?
I'm pretty sure messing with fonts in two locations is recipe for disaster:
your hard drive > system > fonts
your hard drive > library > fonts
you can pretty much destroy whatever fonts live in your
*user* folder, but I believe the two folders as noted above
are responsible for fonts as they appear in your apps.
if you've used / installed or otherwise messed with something
like Suitcase, it might've zapped something.
but then again, maybe you know this already and it's a
corrupt preference file? I dunno, most people I know are
fairly lax with their font (mis)management. but I'm one
anal mofo and like to **control** my mac.
I guess it's all a matter of how comfortable you are
when it comes to poking around the system's innards.
so have you installed / uninstalled anything lately?

Jaypee wins. That program fixed it.
Plus I didn't have to pay for it.
Bonus.

Very interesting. Because that looks like an Indian script (Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Marati--I really don't know which one).

You should use Camino, safari sucks.
Or use FireFox with a Safari-esque theme, like GrApple (Brushed) or iFox. Or, since you fixed the problem, keep using Safari.

Buy a PC.
I've always wanted to say that to a Mac user in trouble.
i had that happen, i dont remember what i did though :(
try and reset safari
safari to reset safari. it will close it and open it up like it is the first time you are using it. so i would backup things you dont want to lose.
