Fantastic article, I appreciate the link. I only hope that it could go as smoothly for the rest of the world. Although I highly doubt it. :)

It wasnt smooth, but im sure its better than it will be in other places. The Cubans call it "the special period" and rarely talk about it. Most people has 1/3 of their caloric intake taken away for about 2 years. Some people starved to death literally. BUt yes, it does show hope that it is an entirely survivable situation, but then again, they were much more prepared for it than the US.

I just read this article and found it fascinating. As a guy who spent way too much of his life studying political science I wonder if small states like Cuba and Denmark will have an advantage in the world of peak oil.

That article is great, and I really admire the Cuban revolution. But to rain on the parade a little bit, read this:

The best thing Cuba could do is write a new constitution permanently enshrining the advances of the revolution while liberalizing politically. If Cuba was a truly multi-party socialist nation that allowed more dissent then the American embargo would be exposed as the sham it is and Cuba would be better prepared for a post-Castro future.

Agreed. Unfortunately, it seems that Raul is not the sort to do that. Also, its hard to write a constitution that expressely forbids McDonalds and Yankee Imperialism. That requires a personal touch.
