Is it a terrible idea to use a cruiser frame to create a fixed gear?

I bought a really sweet Electra cruiser frame (aluminum, threaded bottom bracket, really nice welds) to do this with but never followed through.

I built up a modern Fuji Shakalaka aluminum cruiser into a wicked around town bike. I am not so sure about old vintage cruiser frames tho. I tried an old J.C. Higgins frame I had from the 60's and the dropouts were so thin it made me nervous. I could not skid the thing no matter how hard I tried.......the wheelbase was like a hummer limo.

I'm thinking about doing this as well. I really like the Felt cruisers, and they even sell a "Blank Canvas" frameset. I asked them what the spacing was on the rear and they said it was 110mm. So, unless I can find some njs stuff or vintage stuff it may be hard. Or, I guess I could always take a front disc hub, drill my cog for ISO holes and buy a new axle. The frame is Aluminum so that's why I'd have to go through all that trouble. Felt does have a steel cruiser now called the V12 but I don't know if they'll sell the frame separately. I wanted to make an old cafe racer looking cruiser. Thing is, if I go with a 24" wheel with 3" tires, That will be one hell of a leg workout if I want to gear it to prevent spinning out. oh well, better get some cash together and quit my whining.

Kludge a BMX hub. Done and done.

I've restored an old Schwinn Breeze and converted it to fix.

Do you mean jb weld, or is there a disc hub I can use? I'll probably just get the steel v12 bike and respace the frame and rebuild the wheel.

I was suggesting a suicide hub. Respacing a front disc hub would (and has) worked. If you've got a steel frame, spreading that is the best bet though.

The guy at my LBS said he could space a formula hub down to 110mm for me.

I wish I could find some info on how to build a suicide hub using a BB lockring ....

I am wondering what is safer....

and who makes a FG cog that will screw onto a standard cruiser bikes hub ??
