i'm looking at 2 campy front hi flange hubs and they look identical, except one has 32 holes and has the word 'record' stamped underneath the work 'campagnolo', and the other has 36 holes but does not have the word 'record' stampe, however does have the name. i was wondering if anyone has any insight as to why only one of them says 'record', and how you tell exactly which hub it is, cuz isn't there different kinds or campy record hubs?

The one without "Record" is older. I believe you can find out exactly what year they added "Record" to their hubs, here: http://www.campyonly.com/history/timeline.html

adam: $5 for you if you make us a little easy to follow time table on the evolution of campy hubs! i was going to ask this question: my hub has Campagnolo (in the cursive script) as well as "Record" stamped on it, but it also has the famous World Logo... can you name the year for me, since i am too lazy to do my own research.

I've been wanting someone to make a clear track-specific Campy timeline for a year. No, two.

Who's up for the task?

i already nominated you, and i already gave you my final price!

we can work as a team though, i have mounds of free time at work.

yes sir!

and, ps: pat on the back for being able to get a good pic of that thing... maybe it is my disgustingly old digital camera, or the fact that it focuses for me, but i cannot for the life of me get a good shot of the inside part of the hub. great photo!

another way to tell the age is to take the locknuts off and look at the date stamped on them.

obviously this won't work if they've been replaced...

woo! i knew dolface would have the end-all answer for us all. so simple too!

did they start stamping at a certain date and stop at a certain date? or should an ancient hub have the stamp and a very recent one have it as well?

this is speculation, but it's likely late 80s (88 or 89), based upon when the bike was put together that these hubs are on.

also, if you want to do anything with that pic, it's here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/thisisforever/91510392/in/set-1484247/

i think they all have them, but i'm not positive...

(and it's kind of a pita to see the date 'cause it's on the inside face of the nuts, so you have to basically re-adjust your hub to check the date).

nice! thanks.

and now for my next question: my campy hubs, all the campy hubs i have ever had actually, are not shiny. they don't sparkle. they are like dulled satinny alluminum rather than that sparkingly heavier looking metal. is there a way to polish mine to make them bright like that? those c-records on ebay are like jewelry... mine look like tin-cans. any help?

hollllld up, campy cranks cant really be shined up to the same mirrory finish as the hubs/pedals can, right? they are supposed to be that dullish satin finish correct?

we can still have the huff party though. bump bump bump.

I have no idea, but it cant hurt. I've deffinately seen ones shinier than mine.

I believe so. I have Campy NIB NOS track cranks of C-record era - they are satin, so (more so) are shamal rims. The hubs which came with shamals are like mirrors, though.
