Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - redline monocog rear wheel question

Im wanting to build a single speed bike with all my spare parts and saw the redline monocog frame and fork at pricepoint for around 150. Would I beable to use my old rear wheel with the Gusset 1-ER Single Speed Conversion Kit. I saw on their website it has a bolt on rear hub and have no idea if a skewer type hub would work.

What kinds of hub do you have now?? Is the monocog a 135mm rear spacing or 110mm. Early monocogs were 110 and later ones are 135.

Skewer will work with a tensioner I would say.

Just a regular generic quick release rear hub. As for spacing I guess I would need to email redline or pricepoint on that one.

My understanding is that the newer (2006) Monocogs have 135mm spacing, while anything older has 110. My 2004 monocog is 110.

Can't you just cold-set the stays to 120mm? It's only a 5mm bend per side. People go from 127 to 120 all the time, so I don't see why 110 to 120 would be a problem.

respace the frame to 120.
or many 120mm track hubs can be de-spaced down to 110. Suzue basics can for sure.

ah I see it no on their site now. How would i put on a tensioner if it doesnt have a rear derailuer hanger.

You wouldn't,but it's still a dang good buy even if you have to get a new rear wheel.Depending on your riding style a QR might work on it anyhow.Try using a steel mtb scewer with serrated washers.

a quick release ain't gonna work because, as you said, it doesn't have a derailer hanger, so you would have nowhere to put a derailer-style tensioner (like the surly singulator). the only way to tension the chain is to pull it back on the forks and a quick release isn't going to hold it tight enough.

what you might try, which i have NO idea if it would hold or not, is to buy "track" style tensioners like the surly tuggnut and put it on, then use the QR... that might be what people above have been saying, but we need to distingush between the type of tensioner we are refering to!

The washer pictured next to the Surly Tuggnut, is for the QR. Hopefully the QR will hold tight, otherwise you might mash the wheel into your seat tube! The good thing about using the Surly tensioner is that it should keep your wheel from moving forward if the QR doesn't hold. I'm using the 1-er right now on my Ditch Witch/Deore wheel, and it's holding fine. In fact, for some reason, the hub is really quiet when coasting, almost like there's no ratchet.

With 110 spacing that you can't cold set, you've got three options:
1. Buy some 110 keirin hubs ($$$$$)
2. Get a front disc hub, respace to 110, and use a bolt-on cog on the disc mount.
3. Make a BMX hub a suicide hub. Not the safest.

For you 110mm monocog guys, I just received my Promax rear the other day, and there are a couple of washers on each side of the hub, which look like they can be removed to give you a 110mm OLD. This makes me happy, and I think I'll be looking at making my fixed cruiser this summer!
