I have a 02 rockhopper comp and its been a great bike. I have beat the hell out of it and its still goin.
Other bikes I researched were the Giant Rainier, Giant Iguana, and the Kona Blast. All of these are good bikes to start with that wont clear you bank account.

I'll go with pharcyde. All of those are good bikes that are easy to find in Canada. Also check out Norco and RM. Depending on where you are they sometimes make cheaper and easier available bikes.
Another Kona I would suggest 'trying' is the Kona Stuff. You can usually find it around 950cdn and it is a tough and durable bike that has a different geometry than traditional xc bikes. :)

I agree with the rest of the guys on this. One thing though, please quit using the AOL'ese. It makes you look ignorant, which you're probably not since you found us here.
