Well, my car went caput--so I'm taking this as an opportunity, as far as local travel is concerned, to go car free. On my non-profit pay, I'm unable to really get another one at this time anyway. I'm still using a company car for travelling to my speaking engagements, but other than that, it's car free from here on out. I live across the street from the office (a 1/2 mile walk--rural driveways!), so I already walked to work anyway.

Welcome to the club, I have been car-free for almost a year now (I dumped the car in Apl of 2005, well the car did die in Oct of 2003 so maybe I can claim longer even though I owned it and paid insurance on it for those 7 months) You will find, it is nice, but can be a headach at times, but I would not trade it at this time.

Congratulations! :) You're in a rural area--is shopping and entertainment going to be difficult for you?

Are you really a linguist? That's one of my interests.

It won't be too bad--there's an Albertson's 4.5 miles from me. By rural, I mean on the outside of podunk town just outside of the OK City suburbs. For entertainment, I have friends who regularly head off to movies, out to eat, etc and we always load up into one or two vehicles to get there.

Am I a linguist? Yes I am. My graduate work is not specifically in linguistics, but in classical Greek. However, my mentor in Greek was a professional applied linguist and he took me through an entire graduate progam in linguistics us classical Greek as the model language. I now work for a non-profit doing work in the developing world. I'm presently overseeing a number of projects of taking unwritten languages and getting them into writing. I do know 2 spoken languages and 2 ancient languages not spoken anymore (in the form that I know them). I would highly encourage you to pursue that route if you're interested in it or would just like to learn more. Any local university has probably got a number of courses in linguistics.

Longhorn! I hope that's not a reference to that school in Austin, TX :p. I'm a member of the Texas A&M Association of Former Students, and that would be a supreme insult ;) Don't worry, I'm only kidding.
