W8? I dont get it. How is it diffrent from a V8? Is it like two vee 4s joined at the crank shaft side by side? like this VV but with the bottoms of the vees joined? Just wondering. Ty

The biggest difference between a W8 and a V8 is the profile that it fits.

A W8 is basically two V4's side by side rather so it fits a wider profile rather than two V4's end-to-end (standard V8) which would have a long profile.

W8's aren't too terribly common, W configurations are really more practical for W16's like in the Bugatti Veyron

Here's the best description I've found:

In the case of the W8 engine, the W is formed via two V-4s set side by side, with each V-4's cylinders set apart at a super steep 15 degrees, and the opposition of the two banks of V-4s set at a very flat 72 degrees. If this sounds very complex, most V-8s are set at a taller 45 degrees, and all the cylinders go in a row, two banks of four cylinders, so the engine bay has to be both deeper, to accommodate the taller engine, and longer, to fit the cylinders in a longer line.

Planes also have the X motors. which is like..... well an X.

The Phaeton has a W12 option.

Actually most V8s are set at 90-degrees apart on the banks, giving you lots of room to squeeze in a supercharger! :)

The W8 gives you a shorter engine, about 3.5 cylinders long compared to the V8's 4.5 cylinders length. The overall width is similar due to the narrower 72-degrees between the main banks. Although the overhead cam will make the engine wider than traditional push-rod V8s. Here's a picture of what one looks like:

Interesting design is that on VW's implementation, the two cams on each bank drives only one type of valve. So the left exhaust cam drives two rows of exhaust valves while the other cam runs all the intake valves:
