I've got a big speaker upgrade coming this week and am looking for suggestions for the first 5 songs I should play. BTW, the wife won't be home so I'm going to play them loud.
Mayo,
1) Time by Pink Floyd for the bells, ticks etc.
2)Tocata and Fugue in D minor (pick your favourite organist, Virgil Fox is pretty good)
for the bass and contrasting treble of the fugue
3)Cowboy Junkies Misguided Angel or Song for Elvis for the midrange and vocals.
4)God Speed You Black Emperor F# a# oo East Hastings (all 17 minutes of it)
5)Genesis Lamb Lies down on Broadway just because.
BTW you might wait about 50 hours till the speakers get fully broken in
before any "critical" listening. . . .ok, 3 LP's after start then put on the
good stuff.
Marty
cinder and smoke - Iron and wine
2 more dead - RJD2
so what - david grisman and jerry garcia -
firesuite - doves
fog vs mould for the length of love - interpol (antics remixes)
what kind of speakers, what kind of music?

Link to the speakers above.
Nice advice Lotek, thanks.
I've got the studio Lamb as well as the live version that came on the boxed set (and while we're talking, do you know the cover band Musical Box?). I'll have to decide which to play.
I like the idea of Pink Floyd and thought about buying the SCAD version of Dark Side. I hear it's pretty good.
I was also thinking Rock And Roll Ain't Noise Pollution.
How about Flamming Lips Soft Bulletion, seem to remember there's some heavy sounds mixed in there.
Or
Van Halen Everybody Wants Some, that's fun.

Every time I make a change to my stereo system, I play Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms to judge whether I've made an improvement or not. I have copies on both CD and LP just for this purpose.
If you want to play something LOUD, and see what the new speakers can handle, try Gn'R Appetite for Destruction. You may want to let the speakers break in a bit before pumping this one, though.

Something off Sparkle in the Rain -Simple Minds -for dynamic range.
Cirrus -Back on a Mission -for hard rock.
F.S.O.L -Dead skin cells -for deep bass tones.
Bela Fleck -Sinister Minister -acoustic properties.
Chemistry Set - Sahara Drive -distortion.
Leftfield -Swords -just because it's one of the coolest tracks ever.

I do the same, but with Steely Dan's Gaucho CD.
FYI, Marc Knopfler plays on couple of tracks.
Pink Floyd's One of These Days is a good bottom end tester

All true quality speakers need a break in period before they really start to sing, and some are stiff and need 8 to 20 hours of working in before they should be driven to their limits.

Oh, I've got 18 years on my b&w's, can I crank them up now?

Sweet, do you have the Nautilus or one of the CM series? Not many people here in the US are very familiar with Bowers and Wilkins I would be interested to get your opinions, background and system info.
I have Vandersteen 3A-s’s for music and Dalquist DQ10’s for my home theatre.

No, these are 1987 dm220i speakers, the nautilus and cm's came out later, I think the matrix series came out just after mine. My uncle bought these new for our family and my mom had listened to classical music on them at low volumes for years until she finally gave them up to me. They are mint and sound as good as they ever did. I haven't listened to many of the new ones, but I hear great things about them. A friend has some newer bookshelf units and they sound awesome for the size.
