I assume you mean not in the back of a van?

I have met lots of folks who have toured the country (and the world) on mtn bikes. They do well.

Why not check out the touring forum - many experts there.

I met a kid a couple of Great Western Bicycle Rally's ago that rode his mountain bike from Pt. Barrow, AK to Tierra de Fuego, Argentina.

On the way he was run over by a bus which screwed up him and the bike. He healed and the bike was repaired and continued.

He took a couple of years. He was apparently a native Argentinian who was brought up in the USA. He spoke flawless Spanish and completely American English so he had no communications problems on the way. Furthermore he was college age so he could always stay with other guys in the college dorms in all the big cities.

Really NICE kid. Great slide show too.

I wish him the best of luck in his life.

Why? I can think of easier bikes to ride long distances, and I am a mountain biker.
