I've started taking stuff to the recycling center by bike...in the winter, so my mom doesn't take it in her car.
Plus there's a pretty girl who works there. :o

I feel like such a treehugger. :D

This activity does not involve:
-weed
-lounging on a couch
-hemp jewlery
-doritos
-patchouli oil

Therefore you may still not be a hippy.

Probably just right for the OP who I suspect likes women his own age.

Actually, you need to also get engaged on a monday and get married on the next Saturday on a beach in NorCal in torn blue jeans and exchange bracelets instead of rings. Two of the people who report to me and who are supposed to allow me to mentor them called me two Thursdays ago to announce to me that they were getting married on Saturday and had gotten engaged on Monday  That's how they're wedding went. At least their families got to take part. Do keep in mind that they are 21 and 19 and neither have been married before.

Doritoes? No self respecting hippy eats those. It's only organic chips made locally by other hippies using fair trade practices.
:Shakes down long luxurious hippy hair:

Actually, Doritos were pretty big with my hippyish crowd in the early 70s, not long after they first came out. I don't know why.

BTW, we did not like the term "hippy" by that time. We called ourselves street people or freaks. The friends who lived on communes in the country were called "country cousins".

You're not a hippy until you've moved to Haight street (literally, you live on the street), poop in the doorway of someone's place of business, sell oregano to grade schoolers, and protest a war you know zero about. Oops forgot you also have to smell like a horse's patoot and smoke Marlboros while complaining about big corporations being evil.

Far freekin' out! Right on!

- that should be:

"Farm out, man!"
"Right arm!"

Glad to hear you're officially a hippie.
We are stuck in a war which is of no possible benefit to our nation.
The only ones with the guts to do something about it the last time we were in this situation were...hippies.

I have lost track of those particular individuals, so I can't answer your question. (Although I doubt if you really care! :))

However, as most on this forum probably know, the whole organic farm and food co-op scene is still thriving. Most of the merchants at my local farmer markets would fall into this category. My city has a street fair for "alternative" merchants every year, and the variety and numbers of particiants is impressive. There are a lot of them doing business on the Web too, including some who sell bikes and accessories.

What's this scene like where you live? If you know? Or care?

I was thinking of the 60's hippies who were going to "live off the land". Your "doubt" is paid in return, I have no doubts about your peculiar hypocrisies and delusions.

I am not aware of any rural communities/communes surviving longterm while lacking a work ethic, absent any sense of responsibilty, and without a capability to think or plan beyond living for the moment. I don't consider any person or "alternative merchant" who makes a living at his craft a hippy as you apparantly do.

I don't consider anybody to be a hippy. The word is fun, but meaningless. Most farmers and merchants I've known are hard working entrepaneurs.

Sheesh, you can't even spell hippie. Talk about protesting something you know nothing about. It's clear you are speaking outside of your area of expertise.

Nearly as I can tell... Many of them became parents and were forced to get tech jobs to pay for diapers and minivans and settle in suburbia so they could be near good schools. ;)

Others may have gone another way of the simple life and found the inner bliss that comes from a life of no concerns for family or financial responsibilities; only scoring some more meth or alcohol.

So who are those friends who lived on communes in the country you called "country cousins" and why did YOU bring them up in this thread? Are they still there growing hemp or what? Did you really mean standard farmers and merchants or something else?

Or they may be out in the country, not doing drugs, meditating, eating natural vegan foods and making new age music for sale on their website. That would describe my high school girlfriend and her husband.

There are at least 2 communes that I know of, formed in the 60's which are doing quite well for themselves. One is near where I currently live and the other is near Bloomington, IN. The one near Bloomington operates on of the largest sawmills in the area as well as raising all of their own food and having several large, well-stocked fish ponds. One of the nicest times of my life was spent down there, 17 years ago, considering whether I wanted to join them or not. If it weren't for the fact that our religious beliefs did not mesh as well as I would have liked, I'd be there now.

Here is a flashback for all of you. Have you read all of these back issues? --> Mother Earth News (http://www.motherearthnews.com/mothers_library/) Start with the 70's and work forward. For all you souls who still strive to be self sufficient this is wonderful reading. I am still browsing them and loving them!

Far Out Man! For more groovy vibes and reminiscing try the William Hedgepeth book, The Alternative: Communal Life in New America, published in 1970 by MacMillan.
No doubt these gentle people are Masters of the Universe by now.

hi artkansas- there's a difference between people who call themselves hippys (however they spell it ;) ) and people who live the lifestyle. Most of the hippies near my house are just dirty drug dealing vagrants (actually they probably have nice apartments when they're done dealing drugs on haight street, because they only embrace the lifestyle to get high and make money). The OP sounds to be a well balanced individual who is helping out the community rather than tearing it down. IF that makes him a true hippie, than more power to him. I'm all for self-sufficiency, less cars on the road, and more forward-thinking. Peace out.

Yeah, well there have always been bums and lowlifes and I'm sure they've always been attracted to other labels, whether it's pioneer, beat or whatever. It's sad when a positive lifestyle gets corrupted by those who unfairly claim the moniker. I agree, the OP has a solid point, which he's adopting the low consumption, sustainable, to the ground hippie lifestyle. And I salute him.

Scum are scum and have always been.
