Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - re: newbie questions

Hey, I've been lurking SS/FG on and off for awhile now. It seems like every time I get on there is atleast one thread that is a newbie question about fixed gear techniques or hardware, with only a few responses. Anyways, my suggestion would be to make a sticky for all of those questions. Start the thread out with links to good resources (sheldon brown, etc.), and then have all beginners questions in there. I'm not sure how the moderation system works here. A sticky thread for all newbie questions seems beneficial to me, but I may be wrong. Opinions?

What I see happening:

You still get the same amount of newbie questions, but the *****ing about newbie questions doubles as the first half dozen responses to any newbie question will be to direct the poster to the newbie thread. Then the question gets answered, anyway.

I can't tell whether you are a clever troll or just haven't been around long enough...I'll bite though.

Every newbie thred progresses as such
-Newbie Question (i.e pista vs langster)
-"Try the search feature *******"
-"See this is why we should have a newbie sticky"
-"If the newbie didn't see the search button how would he/she know to look for a sticky?"
-blah, blah, blah

ad nauseum

Can we make a sticky for people calling for a newbie sticky?
Or just punch those people in the face?

I propose a sticky where we discuss the need for more stickys.

I really don't see why an FAQ is a bad idea. Most of the forums have one.

wasnt there a thread about fixed gear reference sources a while back---that could be stickied as "newbies check here" or something like that

Becuase a faq or stick etc wouldn't help reduce the number of "newbie posts". People's first response would be to tell the to "Check the sticky" instead of "try searching"...same thing in reality.

On a second note how do you answer bag questons or what bike is better without peple posting for clarification...

yes, but if a "general fixed info" stick is the first thing a newb sees, they will be more likely to check that as your naturally look at the first-listed thread first. Unlike the search function, which actually requires some effort in locating

also, the search fucntion actually requires some effort to formulate a search and pour through the irrelevant answers. Granted, a sticky of general info would still require some effort, but it would be less than conducting a search.

I'm just saying it would cutt down on some of the posts.

Then again, if the number of dumb newb posts are cut-down, people here wouldnt have so much fun berating them!

Sorry...not buying it...the Newb sticky would actually be like the 5th thread down(after it settles into 6 pages and 130 replys ala the road bike forum) becuase people would probably post on it with the same frequency as the alleycat thread. Also most forums on all sites have a search funtion...if people really don't know to use that...
