I guess this forum it fits in best, I live out of my bag, I've been car free sense 1979 (june 24 1979), but I like to support the economy by buying stuff. Here is a list of stuff that helps me enjoy being car free.
awsome things in my bag:
a mag light
2 sigg aluminium water bottles
a sig aluminum lunch box
a large moleskin note book
beer bottle opener/15 mm wrench
a pen
my holga

I love neat stuff

pen, pump, tube, tire levers, allen wrenches, 15mm wrench, chain breaker, bike lights (headlight can double as a flashlight if needed), tape, rubber band, pocket knife. If its hot i bring a few wet-naps for cleaning off sweat. Oh and my massive lock is usually in my bag too.

Well, right now not much, just a pump and a repair kit, and many a times a ham radio (a VX-5R for those of you that know and care). But on the 20th it will also contain a breif case. I am such a square ;-) but hay I rather bike to work, then drive (don't even own a car now. ditched that SOB last year)

About the same as the rest of you. A black pouch with tool kit, pump and spare tube. An extra sweater and my lights for the ride home from work late tonight. A salad, chicken with couscous, and butternut squash sweet potato bisque with ginger--all purchased from Mrs. Seif at the City Market--for dinner at work tonight. Keys, wallet, ID. A pair of Dockers and a shirt to wear at work.

Oh no!!!!!!  I forgot my underwears again!!!! I'm going to have to wear my bike shorts for the whole shift!!!

Way too much stuff. Notebook, copy of the I Ching, Usually a shirt change, Various mp3 player cords & adapters, cellphone charger, last will and testiment, multitool, cable lock (at times), lighter, 2 or 3 packs of smokes, card keys for the office, garage door opener (okay, so that one is actually hanging on the outside of the bag), pocket knife, bandana, assorted candy bars, spray deodorant, patchkit (but I always carry spare tubes, levers and a microflate under the seat), extra cellphone, and a tie or two.

I think a good sub question at this point would be what kind of bags are you guys using. Some of you bring along alot of stuff, but it never hurts to be prepared. I usually bring along as a minium:

Wallet
small bike tool kit
light

my main bag, I use for commuting and shopping is a large Timbuk2 classic messenger bag. More space in it than panniers, and I don't have to worry about getting it off the bike when I make a stop.

smokes and lighters and your a cyclist?
Just because the media paints a picture, that means nothing.
There are plenty of cyclists that smoke cigarettes & or weed.
I have a friend that is a heavy pot smoker/beer drinker & he rides centuries regularly.
Rides nearly everyday & rarely under 50 mi.
