Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello guys! what is the best set-up for both, X-country and downhill? or i mean the set-up that you can use for X-country and downhill, thanks
can a downhill, used for X-country
There is no way you can have a race ready XC or Dh bike ready to be used competitavely for the other or even well for the other. Look to a freeride bike, something like a Kona Coiler or even some hardtails would be good. Something like a Santa Cruz Bullit built with Fox 36ers would be good or a Heckler if you won't be too harsh on the bike. Maybe even a Specialized SX would fit pretty well. Look towards a freeride bike with a relatively light build.

i have already a Specialized s-work m5 hardtail, is this okey? yup freeride bike, sometimes we go for downhill and sometimes X-country, now i used X-country setup for downhill, can i used downhill bar for my set-up? i want a multipurpose set-up, can i can used for both x-country and downhill? can u give a tip for that or a mixed part please?
That frame is designed for an 80 mm fork or a 100 mm fork at the most. It is a great xc frame. It is not going to make a good downhill bike though. Sorry.

Ten years ago DH and XC bikes were pretty much the same. But the gap between them has been getting bigger every year.
But while I'm here I'll vote for the Santa Cruz Nomad, based on hearsay. The in-between bikes will do both disciplines well, but neither excellently.

I wonder if people are using the word downhill to freely now.
Yeah, I was thinking this too. I'm guessing the original poster doesn't really know what true Downhill is. The guys that do 'real' downhill, are going really fast, and get air half the time they're on the track. This isn't "my front wheel left the ground" air, it's pretty high. XC bikes are made to take bumps, but mainly just to get you places.
Go check out some video's of 'real' downhill.
If you're looking for a cheap bike that's between the two, check out the Giant AC.
when you think dh think lifts/shuttles up, and then just downhill all the way down. that is what a dh bike is for. i think an aggressive trailbike will suit your needs. the m5 is a xc frame.
Here is a picture of the S-works M5 I had. As you can see it is intended to be an xc race bike. It is a very fast xc bike, it would be one of my last choices for a downhill bike though.

If you are talking about a racebike for serious DH or XC then no you won't find a bike that excells at both. If your looking for a heavyduty trail rig that you can pedal then yes you can find a good bike for that. Bikes like the Kona Coiler,Santa Cruz Nomad and Specialized enduro will work well for you. Iride a Santa Cruz Bullit for a trail bike and it works great. You won't win any races going up hill but its great on the decents. :D

do you mean an actual dh bar or a riser bar.. dh bars are heavier/stronger and more sweep etc than a xc riser... so youre sure that you want a dh bar eh?

Yup, im planning to change my xc bar, to DH bar, for the multi purpose, is that okey?, now im using my xc bike for the dwhill, but not a hardcore Dh, its find me hard to handle, so im planning to change it to DH bar to solve the problem or maybe, and used DH bar and XC bar, for both DH and XC
a dh bar for xc????i would just get riser xc bar

I would ask questions about his bike fit, desired sweep, desired bar width, and type of terrain before making such a suggestion.
But that's just me.

yup dh bar for X-country bike
Have you considered selling your bike and picking up more of an all mountain type bike? You should be able to get a decent amount of money for the s-works then get a bike better designed for your riding style.

No i have no plan for selling my bike, i just wanna knew if i can use DH bar for the my s-work, and used it for DH and x-country, thank very much
What do you consider dh?
Basicly your bike is not made for true dh no matter what handle bar you put on it. It is a light cross country race frame that is not intended for the abuse that dh will put on it.

i think you guys are being to rough on what wiz_heero says, he just asks if its ok to use a dh bar on an xc bike, well i think that if you like how it feels is ok right? thats the main point of everything, to like the way it feels, so try it and tell us if you are more confortable going down in hard and technical xc zones which i presume you call DH.

Yes you can run a DH bar on an XC bike. They are heavy, but likely wont bend when you stack.
The bike might be destroyed, but you'll still have a good working bar for your next ride.
The wall of my bars is like 5mm thick. Stupid thick!
Got tired of bent bars and flex.
