I'm considering the edge 205 mostly because i love hilly rides-close at hand where i live, so i have a few questions to any users in the forum:
1. Why does the 305 version come with barometric altimeter which is supposedly less reliable and more weather-dependent than the cheaper 205's gps alt?
2. Is there a total odometer update function continuously or the distance has to be stored and added after each ride?
3.What is the gps performance under tall buildings, cliffs or trees?
4.What's the total weight of the kit (plus sensors, brackets etc)
5 Is the speed sensor really necessary that is, the gps based calculations fail that often?
6 Is there an option for extra battery for long rides
Thanks for your help guys

1) Well the 305 has the barometric altimeter as a redundant backup to the GPS altimeter.
2) don't know
3) Pretty darn good...much better than the couple of older hand held GPS units I have used. I can get signal in my basement.
4) Not sure of the actualy total weight but the claimed weight is 88g for the 305...I would guess that is for the main unit. The CAD/Speed sensor is probably about the same. The mounts are really light as is the unit...I was a bit shocked how light it was when I got it (the 305)
5) one word...trainer.
6) Have not heard of one.

1. Why does the 305 version come with barometric altimeter which is supposedly less reliable and more weather-dependent than the cheaper 205's gps alt?

The 305 has both GPS and barometric altitude. Barometric altitude must be calibrated, but, once it is, it's more accurate than GPS based altitude which only claims to be accurate to +/- 100 feet. I believe the 305 uses the GPS altitude to calibrate the barometric altimeter, so you really get the best of both worlds.

2. Is there a total odometer update function continuously or the distance has to be stored and added after each ride?

It needs to be stored and added after each ride. I suppose you could keep a running total the whole time (never resetting the clock) but that would make all of the other calculations (such as average speed, etc.) pointless.

3.What is the gps performance under tall buildings, cliffs or trees?

It's very good. I've never had a problem, even downtown surrounded by tall buildings.

4.What's the total weight of the kit (plus sensors, brackets etc)

The 205 has no external sensors, and the unit probably weighs a couple ounces.

5 Is the speed sensor really necessary that is, the gps based calculations fail that often?

The 205 has no speed sensor - all speed data is calculated from the satellites, and I've never experienced a failure to register speed.[/QUOTE]

6 Is there an option for extra battery for long rides

No.
