I just got a new set of wheels that came with an 8-speed shimano cassette on an older hyperglide freehub, and since my bikes run 9-speed, I want to switch the cassettes out. From everything I've heard, 9 speed cassettes work fine on hyperglide freehubs, but when I locked down the 9-speed cassette, the casette wasn't tight and had some wiggle room on the freehub (up to 1/2 mm). Why is that occurring, and what do I do to get rid of it? Thanks!
Take the cassette off and see if the freehub wiggles. It wont be as noticable but if it does, then your freehub needs to be adjusted. If not, put a spacer behind the cassette (and dont forget to re-adjust the RD). lemme know if you're unsure about any of this.
Does the end of the older hyperglide freehub body have threads? Sounds like you've got a cassette with an 11 tooth small cog on a non-compact freehub body. As mentioned, a 1mm spacer behind the cassette is the answer.

that'd be the problem. Thanks!
