Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I was struck by a car on Jan 28th and sustained a tibial plateau fracture. This means non-weight bearing for three months. I want to get started cycling again when the time is right and wanted to know if anyone has recovered from the same injury and has some tips or warnings, etc.

hey man, I thought I was the only one! Get ready for pain and disappointment... I was non weight bearing for 6 months. Had to learn to walk with a cane. My arms got ripped though from the crutches. I have other problems ( not bone related ) with my knee that prevent me from 100%. But it did take almost a year to not feel 'normal'. I remember biking before I could walk and falling a few times. I am sure you'll do it too. I have broken many bones- and they always heal 100%. It is the tissues- ligaments, tendons... that are the real worry and pain. 3 months sounds not bad though, I don't think you should have severe atrophy. So no worries. I would talk to a sports physical therapist. They can set you up with a good plan and schedule. It is a very individual process. Good luck man.

Welcome to the forums, lovetocycle!
Ready for a crutch workout? My crutches are in the garage, waiting. Send me an e-mail. We'll get our heart rates up.
Have you tried getting on the spin bike yet? That was the first thing I was able to do, six weeks after my hip fracture. Zero resistance, about 15 minutes of gentle spinning. I was still on the walker at the time. Getting on and off the bike was the hardest part.
When you do get back on the road, a folding cane in your jersey pocket will be your friend. Costco has them.

Hey, I've been there - 2 year ago! My fracture was a lateral tibial plateau fracture. I was on crutches for 6 weeks, and then made my way back onto the bike, and have been good to go ever since. From what I've read, a medial (inside) fracture is much worse in terms of recovery. What type do you have????
Regardless, time WILL get you back in the saddle, and you'll be as good as new. Have faith in your doctors, and medical staff. Read everything you can about your injury, and get well sooooooooooon.
Good luck. You'll be back before you know it. :)

Thanks for your comments. I did have a lateral fracture and my doctor said I had a 4 out of 10 in terms of how bad it could have been. I have a spinner bike and will start this weekend to spin one legged. I need to clear all the bad blood out and get some endorphins moving. The crutches are a hassle, but part of the deal.
I grew up in Pittsburgh before I moved to Calif.
Thanks again for your encouragement. It means a lot.

Take care of that fracture, and soon it will just a memory. Until then, relax a bit, and catch up on non-cycling stuff.

It'll hurt for a good while. Start using that leg only when your docter allows you to, and take it very easy from the beginning. Glucosamine and other joint strengtheners (Schiffs brand makes all kinds of this dietary supplement stuff) will give the bones a little extra help mending. Drink skim milk or equivalent for protein and get well soon! In the meantime, keep the rest of your body in shape and try to take it easy on the damaged bits as it won't do you any good to exercise before the docters say it's time.

Fell off a cliff 4 months ago, yesterday I got to go home. Tibial plateau fracture on the left knee, heel all mashed up on the right side. Real happy to have an electric assist on my extracycle otherwise I couldn't really get around on a bike.
This sucks.
