Wow, it's 57 degress this morning in Chicago. I started bicycling last November, wearing layers of long underwear and polartech and am wondering what I'd need to wear when it's this warm? I'm going to go for a short spin before work just to see how much easier it is to pedal when it's warm out (about 40 is the warmest I've been out on before) than in the cold.

Less.

A long sleeved jersey, windproof top and any insulation neccessary.
Lightweight tights over shorts.
I would still wear full (but not arctic) gloves and a neck-warmer tube.

Long sleeve jersey and leg warmers. Or, you could probably get away with a short sleeve jersey, arm warmers, and maybe a short sleeve or vest base layer as added insurance.

this mid-temperature stuff can be tricky sometimes. it equally easy to overdress as it is to underdress.

for 57 degrees, i'd wear a base layer with a long sleeve jersey, and something long enough to cover the knees. no booties, but i might still wear light wool socks. light gloves as well. i tend to run cool, though, so maybe you don't need the base layer.

In my case:
Mountain shorts and a t-shirt.
or cycling shorts and a poly shirt. Maybe a light cycling jacket if it is a bit cool.

This is the neither warm nor cold zone. If it were 57F and in the morning (and therefore likely to warm up), I'd wear a baselayer, s/s jersey, armwarmers, shorts, kneewarmers, windvest, and full finger gloves.

If it were 57F and in the afternoon (and therefore likely to cool down), I'd wear a baselayer, longsleeve jersey, shorts, tights, windvest, and full finger gloves. And I'd put a beanie, toe covers, and maybe another pair of gloves in my pocket. But I'm a cold-weenie.

Shorts and a long sleeve jersey...if it's going to be warming up then a short sleeve hersey and arm warmers.

But I'm a cold-weenie.

spoken like a true californian.:) that's basically what i wear when it's in the 20's and 30's.

Wow, it's 57 degress this morning in Chicago.

Did you check with Tom Skilling to see what the temp's going to be when you ride home?

57 degrees in the morning in Chicago in mid-March could mean it'll be 60 when you ride home, or it could be 25.... :o

Two top layers made of a short sleeve jersey with arm warmers and a full zip long sleeve jersey. Shorts. Regular short finger gloves and no shoe cover, unless humide or windy.

If humide or windy, replace top long sleeve jersey with light jacket or wear jacket over the two layers. Maybe shoe covers and long finger gloves.

Note: better to overdress a little, light jackets, jerseys and warmers can easily fold and fit in back pockets.

Thanks for the advice! I ended up using a wicking long sleeved top under a short sleeved wicking tee shirt, a pair of regular shorts, wool socks and leather gloves for my 10 minute trial spin. I came back after working up a good sweat, and I usually get cold easily like Calsos. I think I'm going to need to drink a lot of water while pedaling this summer! Thanks again for the advice for this newbie.

No insulation. Your body heat is all you need at this point.

I suggest a long sleeve top and cycling shorts. Bring along a jacket for times when you stop. You'll probably end up taking the jacket off.

I'm a relative newbie to cycling as well (I started cycling in January) and found that with weather in the mid 40s-upper 50's I'm comfortable in a short sleeve wicking shirt with a long sleeve wicking shirt on top and a wind vest on top of that. For the lower body, shorts + baggies on top, knee warmers, and thin wicking liners under my socks since my feet tend to get sweaty. Cheapy stretchy fleece gloves under my regular short-fingered gloves. I've used this setup with temperatures in the upper 30's/low 40s, except I added homemade arm warmers (tube socks with end cut off) under my long sleeve shirt and removed them once I warmed up. Even with afteroon rides in the 60s I wear a similar set up (minus feet liners) because it is ALWAYS windy in the afternoon here. I've had one ride so far where I didn't need a vest or knee warmers. I can't wait for the warm weather...
