The barrel adjuster on my right LX shifter broke off.
1) Is this a part my LBS should be able to order?
2) Any suggestions on how to remove the broken piece still inside the shifter? Is disassembly recommended, if necessary?

To remove use something smaller in diameter that can expand againt the walls of what is left and pull it out. I never reccomend disassembly of a rapidfire shifter. With all of the peices and microscopic parts you don't want to risk it. I would ask yur LBS on parts. I know for example you can get the shift indicator. There are not a whole lot of parts for them as they are not designed to be servicable.
If the problem is just the barrel adjuster, you may be able to improvise a suitable replacement, as many brake and gear systems use similar devices.

I think I would try a set of needle nose pliers first. If there is a bit of the barrel adjuster that you can get a grip on, use the pliers from the outside to turn it out. If you can't get a grip, shove the pliers into the adjuster, open them up and try turning the broken piece from the inside. I expect that your LBS will either be able to get you a new barrel adjuster, or dig one up from the parts bin. Good luck!
