ugh... they're making it harder to resist. new, better colors. a frame only option. campy component option. they're bound and determined to get $4000 out of me (if only i had it). trekbikes.com

i know some of you hate treks, but you have to admire their effort to let people have a little freedom with their ride.

they are nice bikes, but IMHO are a bit trendy, I see them a lot around here, and some bike shops only sell treks. I kinda like to have a unique ride, but then again I wouldn't turn one down if I got a good deal :D

This is pretty funny since Trek originally started as a small
production FRAME shop. Sure you could get a complete bike,
but Frames were their main thrust.
Does anyone else see the irony in this?

I do, I do :) I like trek, and I like that it has gotten alot of American's on the bike from Lance kicking butt in Europe.. but I don't like that they charge so much because of the name... keep true to you roots ya know?

i'm not sure i understand. how are they not keeping true to their roots? i mean, they're still building frames in wisconsin, they still turn out a great product. it'd be one thing if all of a sudden trek's flagship bike was a taiwanese bmx bike sold at wal-mart, but i don't really have a problem with trek being quite large now. of course, this is coming from a guy with two schwinns, so i feel i can speak on when a company has officially sold out.

I don't mean they sold out or anything, I'm talking about the prices thats all.

gtocha. i'd be a very happy man if i could get my hands on a custom 5900 for somewhat less than $4000...

Supply and demand, my friends, supply and demand. They'll charge as much as the market will pay. Can't blame them for that.

Pricey??? Have you looked at what you are getting for these prices? A Trek 5200 runs for $2700, equiped with ultegra, a 2.6 lb frameset, bontrager race light wheels, and a life-time warrenty on the frame. There are not many bikes that are as light as this one and with the same quality for the price. Their prices are very reasonable. So reasonable that I plan on getting one in the future :).

I wonder if they have a completely plain carbon fiber model, with just "trek" written on it in Silver. If I had $4000 to drop on a bike, this is how i'd outfit it...

I then would put black dura-ace wheels or bontrager OCLVs on it. I'd put Campy record shifters, and black out the whole bike, except for just the chainrings (the arms would be CF), the chain, and the cassetter which would polished to a gleaming silver. Oh man...that would be awesome...

These frames have a structural half life.

When I lay down that kind of bread, I'd like to know I'd be riding it 10-20 years down the road.

I'm not trying to mix it up, just to give balance.

If you have money flying out of your a$$, then it's not a concern.

For $4,000.00+, you could get a bike that would last forever that Lance would only ride off camera.

They have a structural half-life? That's a misuse of the word, but I'm assuming you mean they have a short structural half-life? I've seen very high-mile OCLV's from the early 90's that are still going very strong.

They also have a lifetime warranty...

And finally, anyone with 4k to spend on a BIKE, will probably not be TOO heart broken when the frame gives up the ghost 15 years down the road.

I mean no adversity.

I just wonder how many will find their way to be classics.

By all means, buy Lance's carbon bike.

Buy Lances bike. heh.

My logic in buying a 5200 was that it is very light, comfortable, well equiped, very well priced, and american made.

I could care less if Lance rides it (or rode it, as is the case with my '02 model), or if it will ever be a "classic". I just know I enjoy riding it, and thats what it's all about.

.

You are right. However, don't you feel like you missed out a little?? Project One bicycles offer custom paint, and for the truly narcissistic you get your name painted on the frame!!!!

I looked hard at Trek's Project One bikes, before I bought ... Pretty neat Website setup. It's nice that they're offering a broader array of options. It makes you feel like you're getting a real custom bike.

I noticed during my buying cycle that many mfgs had strong leanings toward's certain setups. :D

Palooka, I am happy to say I have to agree with you... :D I know my ride is the best and my dream bike. However, I doubt I'll be riding it in 10yrs. I am still working on winning the toy race... :) May be my son will get my ride in my Will.

:)

I have ridden all types of road and MTB bikes. But when it came down to it, I bought a Trek 2200 with Campy of course, and a Trek 6700 MTB. The quality and price I found hard to beat.

Of course if someone wanted to give me a Colnago I would not turn it down.

I'd go with the "Cow Bike" paint job. What a hoot.

I made a trip to a shop today to see if they had anything that I might pick up for a commuter. He had a 5300 Project One that was the prettiest blue metal flake with the floral pattern on it. It was sharp!

I like to get onto Project One and dream. I pick everything out exactly the way I'd want it, then look at the price and think "Two more years til graduation, two more years."
