It's interesting to me that in a country that has a MAJOR impact on the bicycle business that recreational riding is not very popular. It seems that the reasons that people ride bikes is that they are too young for a driver's license, never learned to drive or they can't afford a scooter. I have seen people on mid to high end bikes here, but most bikes on the streets are either single speeds or what we think of as uprights (comfort or hybrids). Also, the transportational riders never seem to go very fast. If I rode at those speeds, I would probably fall over...
