BMX - Help on a Cruiser

Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum. I live in Minneapolis and I'm looking for some advice on a bike. I want to build a 24" bmx. I thought I'd have an easy time figuring out what i want, but I realized that i don't know much about bmx. I know alot about mountain bikes and single speeds, but bmx is a whole different world. I want a cruiser that is pretty decent, but i will feel safe locking up outside for a few hours. Its mostly gonna be just a commuter, but I also want it to hold up to quite a bit of abuse. Its gotta be somewhat light, so I want an aluminum frame, decent components, and its gotta look good, but not too good. I need it to have V-brake posts on the rear, I dont need a front brake, and a decent crank set. I'm looking to spend about $600. I'm open to the idea of buying a complete bike and upgrading the components as I figure out more what I want. I've heard alot of good things about s&m and standard frames, but I don't know alot about brands and their reputations. I have been getting really bored with cycling lately and I really need a bike that i can just screw around on while I'm out doing stuff. I just have gotten past the point in biking that i can't ride a crappy bike anymore.

thanks for the advice, but the point is that i dont know anything about bmx. i cant search ebay for someone to give me advice on a bmx on ebay. I just need a little input to help me make some kind of decision on a bike.

Ok, my race bike weighs 25 lbs, but you'd break it riding on the street. You really want to get the cro-mo frame and not worry when you get a little stupid. Several companies make a 24. Check out the Haro Backtrail in 24". I'm pretty sure DK has one too. If you can get hold of the February(?) issue of BMX Plus!, it has a great buyer's guide. As far as a custom build, it can't be done for $600.

Light bike is only a good thing if you race, or are a flyweight yourself.

DK makes the General Lee 24" with a CrMo frame.

I don't know if they still make it, but I have the older 24" Fury, which has a 6061 aluminum frame. It's pretty light, but I haven't broken it in the year I've had it (screwed up both hubs and the BB, but they're cheap anyway, and it was fixable)

Yeah I think I was just a little confused... I'm used to my single speed road bike that wieghs 14lbs and my Mtn bike that weighs 22lbs. I wasnt really thinking.. sorry... thanks for your help.

If u have a minute will u take a look at the Shadow Conspiracy cruiser for me and see what u think? There are only 300 of them made. I emailed a few people in the company and everyone says they went crazy with the frame and fork. They usually dont make frames, but they had it engineered from outside the company and spent alot on it. I think they are asking $700 for it. Honestly, I wouldn't buy that. That's meant to be more of a collector's item than anything, hence the very small quantity being produced.

What do people think about the Redline FLight Pro 24?

its a really good bike but beermans right. (im assuming he was talking about the shadow). it was origionally made more for a collectors thing. (see: april issue of ride)

I loved my old Redline cruiser, but aluminium frames can FRO.
