For those who take thier dogs on rides how do you secure them to the basket? I just got the topeak rear basket and i tried securing him with a harness but it only secures his upper torso.

The only thing i can think of is a design similar to the one that holds white water kayakers in thier kayaks.

just take a tie-down strap, and run it through his/her collar.

Seems kinda dangerous having your dog attached to your bike.How about training him/her to run beside.
The main thing is to be able to call Fido back should he/she take a wrong turn or get sidetracked.You
could also take some doggy treats with you and reward her/him at various intervals along the trails.
Although she's not the ideal running with bicycle dog(Ridgeback maybe?) my Pitbull loves to run beside my
bike though she's scatty and gets distracted easily :)

If you like your dog, do not secure it in a basket, it's a good way to get your dog hanged.

How about training him/her to run beside.
some of the people I ride with have done this. It works pretty well except everyonce and a while the dog get in someones way and they have to slam on their brakes.... Oh yeah and you need to put the dog on a leash if you have to ride on roads.

You had to be "that guy" huh? There's always gotta be someone to try and slam the thread poster. So he's selfish because he wants to ride with his dog? And if you've payed attention to the posts, it's others that are suggesting on tieing the dog to the basket(strictly joking of course).

Sorry to upset you but i thought my dog would think it was fun to be on the back of the bike since he loves to stick his head out of the car window. I know there is a risk involved but everything is a risk and i dont want my dog not to have any fun because i am afraid something might happen to him and i think my dog would agree with me on that. I tried not securing him but he runs after cats.

staple any excess skin to basket.
in all seriousness, i don't think you should attach your dog in anyway to the bike. if you were to crash, he can't jump out, and could be seriously hurt.

ok i wont atach him to the bike. I will train him to run beside me but it have to be on fire trail with no traffic.

and as for the dawg... just do whta you said about a kayak thing... if you can develop that .. it would certainly work

Here's a pic from the 2006 NSW Big Ride (a week-long supported camping/cycle holiday).
The cyclist, not pictured, is called Olga & she rode a dutch bike.
She would come to the catering tent for breakfast in her PJ's & fur coat. The dog was the most well-behaved dog I have ever seen. While Olga would get her breakfast, it would sit patiently outside the tent & hardly blinked an eye
