Mountain Biking - Gotta love the LBS

I went in today, looking to get some adapters to run full housing for my rear brake, and some shorter bolts so i could run a 2x9 setup and ditch my big ring. I came back having spent only 10 bucks.


Before anyone worries, I didn't get ripped off, quite the opposite. I got a Salsa seatpost for 10 bucks, it is usually 50. The adapters and the shorter bolts were free, along with help adjusting the derraileur after i took off my big ring. I also got some Hope Gothic Rotors, which I beleive are 45-50 dollars each. These had been mounted on someones bike, a Blur with IRD dual bangers, but they pulsated like crazy. So i got em for free. All in all, i think it was a pretty good deal. Heres a few pics, ignore the dopey fender, they didnt have any THE DH front fenders in red, so this one works. There is mud of just the right consistency that it packs up, then gets flung into my eyes once i start moving.

Sounds like the guys at your LBS are pretty awesome! Mine is great but I have yet to get free loot. I'll have to work on that.

Yea, I need to work on that. The gears were black to begin with, so its not that bad. The chain too. I dunno what kind they were. Gunna be time for a new chain and cassette soon tho. Ill work on that one for ya though.

you got a cool bike there, was just wondering what riding you do it looks like a XC bike but going to 2x9 gives the impression of trails?? what size is your larger chainring? that slasa seatpost is cool and whats the new discs like with you brakes?

I do XC. I'm kinda rough on my bike, but i cant jump or drop at all cuz the fork has no travel, and usually I ride with my seat up my ass. There are an awful lot of logs around here though, and most of our trails are singletrack that are kinda hard to get a chainsaw out on. So most of the time people just go out with handsaws and build ramps up and down. I took off the big ring cuz I never go fast enough to need it, and I like the clearance and clean look.

The larger chainring is just a standard 32 tooth. The seatpost is awesome, the mechanic is a pretty cool guy. He's getting a Carver 96er frame, so he passed his post on to me because it fit my bike, and i had been looking for one. Ohh, and you lost me on that last part with the brakes. They are Avid BB7's, and they work great. The rotors squeal a little bit more than the stock ones, but I am confident that once the rain stops, I break them in more, and everything dries out a bit they will quiet down.

Bashguard :) Yea, they didnt have any in stock. It's a really little shop, and there are no freeride places around here. I am gunna order one once I pick one out. Anyone have any suggestions for a Bashring? I dont need something to fit a 38 or 40 tooth chainring, I would actually like something the same size or a little bigger than my 32 tooth ring. Beef is not required. I am not too concerned by weight though. My bike already weighs a bit, and it wont go any lower unless I spend about 800 - 1000 dollars on a new wheelset and fork. So bring on the beef baby!

drivetrain looks fine to me. The chain is clean, along with the derailuer. So the cogs are a little dirty, whooptie-doo :rolleyes:

any tips on how to keep a drivetrain "clean" ...

my conditions are pretty bad... alot of thin layered mud.. the kind that is really just dirty water but.. still seems to stick dirt to bike...

the drive train gets really nasty after just one ride... do i really have to clean it every time?

Depends how anal you are.

I used to just wipe and regrease once in a while and that sufficed as my "cleaning". Never had any problems.
