Touring - Touring in Germany

I am just beginning to plan a short two-weeks tour through Germany next July, mainly in the east area. I would like to include also other countries, especially the Czech Rep.

Checking plane destinations from Madrid I see that the cheapest option is Berlin. So I suppose the start point should be Berlin.

It is my first tour abroad and really I am a bit confused. I plan to make at least 100 km. per day, having made more than that distance in Spain. Suggestions and reccommendations on routes, places to visit,...will be much appreciated.

It sounds like you would enjoy the Elba bicycle trail. It is one of Germany's most beautiful, and leads from the coast to Prague. Here is a link to a map of Germany's long distance bike paths.

Thanks for your comments and great help! I think Frankfurt (Main) is far from the route I am making this year. If you plan a tour in Spain, let me know.

Most probably will try the Elba cycle route as already my intention was to visit Dresden before leaving Germany and going into the Czech Rep. I don't know if I can fit Leipzig too in this route.

Having a good Iberia connection from Vienna I suppose my final destination will be Austria. I will try then to tour on Czech Rep., Slovakia, Hungary and finally Austria, but I have to make km. calculations before I can decide.

Arriving at Telgen airport in Berlin, is possible to leave the airport by bike? Any route reccommended?

You might want to find out how much EasyJet charges to take the bike along. It might be cheaper to find a flight on another carrier that doesn't charge extra.

Tegel Airport is really close to the Spree bicycle path. Just ride south right out of the airport, go through the park, and you will come right to the Spree River, Berlin's major river. Where in Spain are you? My best friend lives in Leon, and I rode the Camino from Frankfurt to Finisterra last summer. :)

I live in Alcobendas, a town near Madrid. I also made the Camino two years ago from Sto. Domingo de la Calzada and plan to make the part in Navarra and La Rioja in a near future.

Sure you remember Fromista (Palencia), will be there on Saturday following the Canal de Castilla in a short 3-days tour ending in Burgos.

As Tegel is so close to the Spree cycle path I will start the tour from that point, heading to the Elba cycle path. Still I have to research on the route to take inside Czech Rep., Slovakia, and Hungary.

Already checked EasyJet connections from Madrid but found that Iberia has a lot more. As I have many points to discount I hope the price to be very competitive.

EuroVelo Long distance routes 2, 7, 4, 9, and 6, in that order, will take you from the airport, along the Elba, to Czech, then Austria, and then Slovakia, without ever leaving a major international bike path. TA DA!!!!

Yes, but it is only one state in Germany, NRW. Too bad it's so small.

I finally made a decision about the route: will start in Berlin next 24/06/2006 and end in Budapest on 9/07/2006, total distance approx. 1300 km. In Germany I plan to take the Elba cycle route to the Czech border and before that another cycle route through Brandenburg.

As I am new into international touring sure will make more questions to all you exprerienced tourers!
