i posted this in the FG/SS forum, but figured it might get more play here.

Per Green Bay City Ordinance:

"No rider of a bicycle shall practice any fancy or acrobatic riding or stunts while operating such bicycle."

I would like to know what exactly constitutes "fancy" riding? I'd like to see a cop try and cite someone for "fancy" riding. I can just hear the appearance before the judge:

JUDGE: Mr. Smith, it says here that you were cited for fancy riding
DEFENDANT: Yes, you honor
JUDGE: Well how fancy was it?
DEFENDANT: It wasn't overly fancy, just above average riding
JUDGE: What kind of bike do you ride
DEFENDANT: A fixed gear bike your honor
JUDGE: Thats one of those new fancy bikes, isnt it---that settles it, if you're riding a fancy bike, you must be doing fancy riding--therefore, i find you were riding fancy
DEFENDANT: But, your honor, the statute says only that I can't "practice" fancy riding. I wasn't practicing anything--I was just riding along the road like everyone else.
JUDGE: Not practicing, ehhh?
DEFENDANT: No your honor, I don't need to practice being fancy, I am fancy enough already
JUDGE: alright fancy boy, case dismissed!

Uh, there's nothing "new" (much less fancy) about fixed gear bikes!

Thank you for noticing the obvious irony/sarcasm in my fictional colloqy.

In fact, I once did have someone ask if my steed was one of those "new fixie things"

One early law prohibited "pedaling furiously." With a single speed or fixed gear, that would sometimes be necessary. :)

Especially downhill. Now THAT'S fancy.

So...no downhills in fixed gear. Case closed.

Is this just on the streets or has all bmx riding been prohibited? This law seems totally unenforceable to me. And totally hilarious!

Why not check the date of the law. Probably around 1890.

Sound like either a very old law, or it's been written by an idiot.

No track stands

No track stands

That brings up an interesting question... Is a trackstand considered riding?

Sounds like someone's pet ordinance. Does that mean Green Bay will not allow BMX parks, since that would encourage "fancy stunts"?
