Foo - Im confused about the whole baiting thing

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

so what about threads that are all in good fun...like the countless merton threads.
are those against the rules also?
Cmon koffee lets see pic8)
What is Koffee talking about??? I'm not on in the evenings much anymore so can you say without trouble starting??
There was a thread that i started that asked if you would take your bike in to be repaired at a place if it was called "M______'s bike shop." It was generally intended to be funny to those who have read all of the countless posts he has made in the Mechanic's forum. Let's just say that there is some debate as to how good of a mechanic this poster might be, he called the cone in a hub, a "gutter thing."
Either way, he was offended apparently because he told me to "suck his blank, you blank." That was apparently deemed as baiting. Maybe I was possibly bating him, depends on your definition. I thought he might fly off the handle because he does it everywhere, but does that make me wrong?
As cyclists what if we turned to gunfire to solve our problems with motorists? When a motorist cuts you off on your bike, can you just pull out your 357 Magnum and launch rounds into the cab? Of course you can. When the officer arrives, just tell him the motorist was "bating" you and he'll apologize and let you go home. Then he'll warn the dead motorist not to bait people anymore.
I think that is basically what has happened here.
DISCLAIMER FOR GESTAPO: This thread does not directly mention a BF member.
"If you attempt to bring up the name of other members in posts to antagonize or bring unnecessary attention to them, it will result in the same type of ban."
I am not trying to antagonize anyone. This post is for informational purposes only. Member's name has not been used in the interest of privacy, and to avoid baiting. Baiting is bad, unless you are a master. May cause blindness, dizziness or erections lasting longer than 8 hours.
Hey that last part was actually funny:roflmao:

By your own explanation what makes what you did different than what a good troll tries to do?

Snowy, it has been good. But I'm seriously in the process of changing my address.
We have a house in Longmont and it's on the radar for a move. We'll see.
My IT department has an office in Golden. It might offer an opportunity to make a seamless transition of about a mile in elevation.
In the meantime, I've been racking up some serious ski time over the last 11 years. I went to Taos over the weekend ...4 feet of new.
I might come down to Longmont this weekend for a pedal.
OMG, Telenick I heard that Leadville had like 150inches of SNOW or something like that.
ITS CRAZY.
It would be cool if you guys moved down here. Then we could get some riding in :)
Its been so dry on the front-range here that the moisture we do get is MUCH needed.
So when is the baby due?

Taos went from famine to feast eh! What a storm, I went to Mt Bachelor on Saturday, same thing there. They said that last Thursday was the day to be there for 4 ft of new, however, I wasn't ready to get back in the car so soon after the drive back from UT. People in Taos must have been very happy!
Hi snowy!!
Hi Shifty,
Sounds like your enjoying the great snow too. :D

NOt much. What makes the other guy's behavior different than what a banned forum member does?

Report a post against the rules and we would ban. Merton might be annoying but I have never seen anything against the rules (then again I don't read every thread, because I find him as annoying as most people do). Trolling a guy into a violent response does not justify the response but the instigator is more at fault imo.
Its never been against the rules to "not contribute useful stuff"...there are more than enough people chilling only in foo that do that.

Maybe you didn't read my post. Is it ok for somebody to tell you to suck their d--k? I DID report it. Why do you think i am complaining. Apparently nothing was done, except for the thread being killed.
i was no more harrassing to you than you were to me.

Ranger,
It is very difficult to make a fixed If then statement. "If this happens, then there is a ban for that amount of time".
I think the most fixed type of thing we have is that spammers are banned for good. When I saw your report, I did not feel MERTON was deserving a ban, he was clearly provoked. I can't remember any threads where MERTON has clearly broken any rules, we look into more than simply the one issue before taking action. The thread closing was the action that a moderator decided upon, and I believe that is fitting for the situation.

Did you bait him into saying that?...sorry maybe I did misread, I saw what he said in response. But if you wanna play, you will get burned. If I bait someone (and I have in the past) and they come back at me full force, then I expect to be blamed as much as them. Unless I completely misread. If thats the case, then I don't even see hows its baiting. If member one says "suck my dick" with no provocation then life is good and said user will get a temp ban. If somehow you have instigated, pushed and proded then take your lumps.
Having gone back and read the threads and seen some of the back and forths. Looks like you were baiting. If you don't see it, not my problem, it was baiting...If you find merton annoying and his posts useless, use the power of the great ignore.
Wow! I didn't know we could say "suck my dick" on the forums. I thought that was vulgar. Guess it just illustrates how out of touch with the world i am. Thanks for the heads up!

...arg I give up. No it isn't acceptable. Yes he got a warning. As are you for instigating/baiting/trolling. Shall I spell it out for you a little more easily? We don't ban on first offences (especially one so minor) especially when there was instigation involved.
Does that make sense for ya?
why is he fighting for my banning when he wasn't banned? he did inspire what i said and it seems like he knew that was the sorta reaction he would recieve from me... so why the whining?

SBW, I like your new avatar. Is that a new rig hanging up behind you?
This thread is reminding me of my days coaching Preschool soccer. Sometimes you have to stop and realize the material you are working with and modify (lower) your goals.

Cool bike. I used to ride a Sugar. Now it's a Titus racerx100. Looking for a 5-7" travel bike to add to the stable. So far it's looking like either a Maverick ML5 or 8, Turner 5 or 6, Nomad, Blur LT, Versus or a Foes FXR. Got any ideas for me?

Wouldn't lowering the goals for preschoolers playing soccer make it more difficult for them? If the goal is lowered, the target would be smaller, and that much harder to hit. To me it would make more sense to raise the goal, or even widen it.
